Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.
Someone asked me to hook up some motion detectors they found on the internet(I really have no idea specifically what they were talking about) to a cell phone and when the sensor detects motion, it will call their home phone. Anyone have any ideas on how to go about doing this?
This really reminds me of a super n00b post wanting to know how to put a ps3 and a 360 in a GBO case with a gamegear screen or something.
I know this is REALLY bad details...I'm trying to figure out what kind of "motion detector" they're talking about or even what phones they have. If I found out I'll post that info later.

Well if you have a way to dial a number automatically then the problem is as simple as translating the output of the detector into the input of the dialer. This could be tackled in every case with a microcontroller, although depending on things some combination of discrete components could solve the job more simply.
Now, people post stuff on hackaday all the time that uses SMS to send data with a cell phone. Example:
