I'd love to do this in the U.K. I was talking to the guys at my local Gamestation and was shocked to hear they were cutting down on stocking retro stuff as it doesn't make as much profit so is a bad use of floor space. It's because the company was bought up by the gaming monopoly GAME
Really worried too that it'll be closed down too, happened a while back after GAME bought Electronics Boutique. Means I'll have to do my game buying on eBay or car boots.
So yer, go for it Triton, if i ever come to the US I'll be sure to visit and spend a few bucks.
One very important step you've missed is doing a survey (door to door, online, etc.) to see if anyone in the area is actually interested in your idea.
Sure, there's lots of people here who think the idea's great, but how many of them will be regulars at your store? I know most of the gamers around me don't get out enough to realize a new store opening in the downtown of the next city over.
You can sell money, cloaking devices, and teleporters, but if your customers (if any) aren't interested in them, you won't sell anything.
Also, I know over here the government gives grants to individuals starting small businesses.
I used to go to college there and I can say that there would be a lot of people interested. People there go walk around Walmart or just drive looking for stuff to do, and a shop like that, I'm sure, would get a bunch of bored college students. I know I would have spent every other day in there when I was back in college.

Would you have gaming facilities as well, or just retail space? We've had several gaming shops come and go in my area, but only this most recent one offers facilites for playing. For an hourly fee, you can bring your own stuff in and tap into their TVs and computers, or you can pay a bit more to rent the system as well. It seems to be pretty popular. Whenever I go there, there's always at least half the machines in use.
True, it can be a bit hard on the equipment, but with your skills, I'm sure you can make repairs that others couldn't. I'd definitely be watching an on-line store, but Iowa's a long drive for me.
The only tip I really have to offer is to keep your internet income on the internet, if you can. Whatever I make on e-bay stays in my paypal account until I need something on-line. It's there if you ever need it to get by, but on the other hand, it's already not in your regular bank account, so you're not likely to spend it on gas, food, etc. unless you need it. It's something that works out for me, I hope it helps.
probably just retail space, the buildings i am looking at are pretty good sized but not THAT big, i will probably have some sort of pay-to-use internet terminal set up tho, and playable kiosks of various systems of course. it will be a very gamestop type of experience but BETTER,a lot.
Don't advertise in real life, advertise online, on forums and stuff .
You can find interested customers much easier, as long as you advertise in the right places, and it's a lot easier/cheaper to do it online. Of course, it helps to spread the word around the area, as well....

most advertizing will be online, and posting ads at the college possibly adspace in the free classified ad thingys that are around here and if business starts doing well eventually radio spots are a possibility
If you do set p some sort of pay internet. Remember, please set up a system of deleating cookies / history when people are finshed with it. That scares me a lot with internet cafes.
Also charging programs suck, there is on near my town that chrges by the hour, so if you start at say, 10 min to 4, it will charge you at 4, then at 5.
So stupid.
