I want to do something with my N64.

But, I've never really done any hardware hacking before. I'd like to be able to do something like an N64 portable, but I'm thinking it's above and beyond my limited skills.

I'm 15, have virtually no soldering experience, but am willing to learn.

I also have a job at my small town's Radio Shack, so getting any supplies will be easy. (And cheap, I might add. Employee discounts are nice.)

So does anyone have any ideas on where to start?

How about adding a screen? You wouldn't even need mess up the internals, just hack up the case a little bit. Perhaps a flip-up screen attached to the back?

Slightly off topic but I want to address some things first;

1.) lol phpBB2, Ben should get phpBB3, or even vBulletin.

2.) I subscribed to this thread, and never got a notification in my Gmail that someone replied to this thread.

3.) We need quick post.

Anyway, I would be slightly hesitant to add a screen. How long/complicated is the process? But I suppose it would be a great place to start. My friend and I were browsing this site during our computer programming class today, and he offered his N64 to me if I needed anything -- so maybe I could start with adding a screen onto it.

How hard is it internalizing the power source? Or making it run off of batteries is what I mean.

I suggest researching that - there is a lot of information on this site. I'm currently researching how to run an N64 off of batteries myself and I think I've come across all I need so far until I actually get around to opening it up.
