Idea for kinda improving the forums.

Post by ShockSlayer »

I was thinking that it would be nice if when we clicked on someone's profile we could find out more about them, like what member number they are, what post count rank they are, and links to their portables and WIP's and stuff.

Example

I think this would be a great idea, it would be easier to showcase your portables, and what you have done on benheck, and you can use your sig for other things.

Comments, criticism, admins who will do this for me? :P

That would be cool. I agree that it would be a great way to find info about someone's portables. From time to time as I'm researching a project I'll go scouting around for a particular person's projects and they're sometimes hard to find.

That would require manual file editing and FTP access, meaning Ben would wither have to do it himself or give one of us the login.

phpbb 3 allows for the creation of additional profile fields through the admin control panel, but I don't know when (or if) we'll upgrade.

@bic: Have you tried asking him? I'm sure if it is benificial to the forums, then he wouldn't say no.

For some reason, the term "lazy as ****" comes to mind.

Arrrr! So it may as well never happen?

If thats the case, then maybe a poll would attract his interest?

Also I like the idea too, but there is like a 1% chance of it happening.

I like it; let's hope the poll is convincing. If not, maybe somebody can hodgepodge something up, kind of like the :wtf: icon.

well that would require some leet haxx0ring alright. First of all, you'd need an extra page for editing everything, then you'd have to somehow check that it's not a third person manipulating somebody elses data, you'd have to set up a database on your own server, make a script for loading the stuff...

Yeah, forget it

Here's my opinion:
ShockSlayer wrote:what member number they are,
That's not a very useful piece of information, and it's already available. just read out the u=xxx part in the URL for their profile. The effort required to have that piece of information printed out in the profile is not very large, but still exceeds the usefulness of it.
ShockSlayer wrote:what post count rank they are,
This information is already available. Go to http://forums.benheck.com/memberlist.php and choose sort by top ten posters, order descending. For anyone below top ten, this is useless. Also, having this printed on the profile also seems to be pretty useless.
ShockSlayer wrote:and links to their portables and WIP's and stuff.
We already have a perfectly working profile+a field for a website URL. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Needless to say, I voted no.

The majority if not all of things on the profile are useless, however they are there so that it is simple to review a member.

The website area is for your website, not your portables. Especially if you have more than one. And I don't understand what you mean by "perfectly working profile" if it was perfect then why would we have this topic :?

I still stand by my opinion. As for post numbers I think quality of the posts is more important than how many of them a user has made. The information whether a person is 50th or 100th in the count is irrelevant, because it doesn't tell much about how much the user has contributed to the forum.

This is the only part that I can agree with to a certain degree. It's just a waste of time implementing something like that for the profile page. I'd rather see a new subforum made especially for the purpose, where every use is allowed o start one thread, to showcase his/her mods. This would be a lot simpler to implement.
