N64P power idea?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

N64P power idea?

IDK if someone has this idea before, but well as I can see the n64 require two voltages right?

3.3v - 2,7A

and

12v - 0,8A

well all of us know that if someone want to make it portable you will need a power regulator right?

So I remember now I had a broken gc (dol-001) MOBO death, and I still have the GC regulator board, then I saw Turbo Tax´s post and a interesting idea apeared in from me ^^

all you really have to worry about are pins 12-22. pin 13 is 3.4v, pins 16-18 are 1.9v, pin 21 is 12v, and pin 22 is 5v. also you have to make sure you have ground.

pins 2 and 13 need 3.4v, pins 6,7,16,17,18,19 need 1.9v, pin 10 needs 12v, and pins 11 and 22 need 5v. just make sure that the pins that I've grouped together, like 6, 7, 16, 17, 18, 19 are connected together. they should be, though.

and that's how you only need 5 wires to attach the gc power regulator board to the GC board!!!!!!!!!!!!! that "bit of bad news" was that a gc regulator had fried and so I ordered another one....

* oh yeah if you turn on your GC and you don't get any sound, try getting the 12v not from the pin on the GC power regulator, but directly from the actual GC ac adapter. I also tried that from the 14.8v li-poly battery pack and it worked fine.

well but I´m not fully sure if this will work

looking at the pin 13 wich it have 3.4v (the n64 have 3.3)

did 3.4 should work fine on the 3.3?

and did the pin 13 will give enough "A" ( 2,7 A required for the 3.3v ) for the n64?

about the 12v output on the regulator I think It work fine on the 12v in.



how do you think about this guys?

is this a good idea? or this will be a good way to fry another n64 mobo :twisted:

I´m sorry if my post gave some extra work for the moderators, I missed post this at the n64 section. so I´m sorry

I doubt someone is interested on this.
anyway I take my polimeter and I got the Volts output from the gc regulator and the original N64 ac-dc converter

the results are :

[Gc regulator board 3.4v pin] my polymeter got = 3,43 volts

[N64 original ac-dc converter 3.3v output] my polimeter got = 3,51 volts


surprising me, the original n64 power adaptor give a little more Volts that the gc regulator.

so I think it will work without major problems.

how about the required A for the 3.3v pin at the n64 mobo, will the gc regulator give at least 2,7A ?

I will make some tests this aftermoon and then I will post the results and some pics for the interested people

Sounds like a handy tip for anyone who has a gutted gamecube AND a gutted N64 laying around... which would be a lot of people here :D

I really like this small regulator board from the GC I think it also can be used on another systems and portables.

Interesting, nice bit of logic, it makes sense that Nintendo use similar voltages in their systems. You realise however that you only need 7.2v (low amp rating, think it was about 0.4amps?) for the N64 and between 2.9v and 3.5v at 1.3amps.

Cool, I got one of those lying around!

In the pics: I noticed: The two ram chips on the n64 are using the original haetsink thing.(bad idea) and the exp pack has no heatsink!(also bad.)

yeah, the 0,4 amps is very low.
No point going above about 7-8v normally, as normally you use that for the screen and N64 and a TI board to get 3v. If you want to use your board, then you probably need more like 12v I guess, to get the different voltages out. On my current project I am going to use two TI cards (3v and 5v) as I am using 7.4v Li-ions (actually measure about 8.2v).

On my last N64 project I used 2.9v at a max of 1 amp, works fine on everything with a jumper pack, however you need 1.3 amps for the expansion pack. I don't think you need more than this (maybe 1.5 amps at peak).

I though was enough with the original heatsink for the two ram chips, and I forgot add one to the expansion pack.

I will get some of my pentium 2 dead mobo and i will get some heatsinks later

yeah i want to use it with the gc board, and I also have a 12v screen, so i planned again to do it running at 12v, but i want to get decent cells at a good price.

but i think the harder steep is reallocate the cart slot and the expansion pack slot, i think i will need some help on that ^^

Actually, the N64 only needs 5V and 3.3V. The 12V line only runs to a 78M05, which is just a linear regulator that bumps it down to 5V anyway. If you wired pin 3 (output) of the 78M05 on the N64 to the 5V line on the GC PSU, it would actually be more efficient. :wink:

yeah, thats true,I just saw it.
I tested to put directly 5 v there and works fine 8)

pin 22 from the regulator board to the pin 3 of the 178M05
