Most would probably say it's been a long time coming, and yesterday, it was confirmed that Toshiba's dropping support of HD DVD. They're now facing hundreds of millions of dollars in losses, and rumours are rampant that the 360 might see some sort of Blu-ray add-on or even a new SKU with Blu-ray built-in. It's definitely weird seeing a superior form of something win in the world of technology, but I suppose HD DVD ultimately wasn't cheap enough to make up for it's partial inferiority to Blu-ray.
P. S. - I'm pretty sure there aren't any other threads regarding this news; if there are, all apologies.

I had the 360 add-on, and I loved all the special features you couldn't get on Blu-ray. It really was a superior format. (waits for "more storage" argument)

More storage is the only argument, and studios putting more effort into features and presentation for HD DVD than they did for Blu-ray (because seriously, HDi doesn't let you do anything on HD that you couldn't do on Blu-ray with BD-J) has nothing to do with the differences between the two formats. Making the same interactive features for Blu-ray that you have on HD DVD isn't something nightmarish like making a perfect port of a PlayStation game on the Saturn (man, am I reaching here).

our tv in the livingroom is from the late 90s, the tv in my bedroom is from the mid FIFTYS. we only occaisionaly rent movies and watch house on DVD, for HD i use my pc connected to my projector

Seriously, this is great. Now that we only have one viable HD format, people should be a lot less hesitant to make the switch.
Now if they'd only stop calling it "Blu-Ray DVD" and other uninformed names.
Our newest TV is an SDTV from about 3 years ago that accepts component, but only has an analog tuner. Our newest player is my DVD recorder (also SDTV, but includes an ATSC tuner). The highest-resolution display we have is the projector, which can theoretically do 720p when hooked up to a PC with a Blu-Ray drive.
I feel sorry for the people who <s>wasted their money on</s> adopted HD-DVD. That equipment will be useless soon enough. Dump it quick while there's still a market for it! (Or maybe the 360 add-on will be a collector's item in 15 years? Who knows...)

I hope DVD sticks around for a while though. I'm not ready for a complete switch to Blu-Ray (I do have a PS3 but still). I like my DVDs.
There was no huge difference between Blu-ray and HDDVD having owned both. Yeah HDDVD had some better features, but then again they also had to use inferior non-HD sound on Transformers due to lack of space. So it had some pretty large short comings as well. I'll give HDDVD this, Transformers and the Bourne series were crisper than any of my Blu-ray discs, but then again nothing looked as good as Pixars Cars or Ratatouille of course they are CGI.
I'm just glad I cashed out right before the end.

The biggest difference between HD-DVD and Blue-Ray is in that Blue-Ray had the information stored closer to the surface of the disc, and so could store more layers on a single disc. Sony was fooling around with ideas a few years back and one of them was an 8 layer Blue-Ray disc. HD-DVD really began lossing footing as it was having trouble getting to a duel layer disc. This really set into question on which would be best. And I guess now we know.
