Installing A Game...

Ugh. My school is so stupid. We used to have Halo, TF1.5, and Counter-Strike installed on our network by the administration to be used by students who completed their work on a timely basis. Well, in my computer maintinance and networking class, myself and a couple other kids basically have nothing to do; the teacher knows we all know the material, so he has us help kids with software and hardware-based issues that pop up now and again that take about 5 minutes to solve.

Anyways, my point is, we used to pass the time playing games, but that's no longer available to us. They've got it so locked down now, you need an administrator password to SAVE FILES! We got the password and had a game installed in a hidden, password-locked folder, but someone was smart enough to back-track the computer the game was installed from, bust the kid, and uninstall America's Army.

So the question I have is this: I would like to burn a game ISO to a DVD, and then install the game on that same DVD. However, whenever you burn a disk image, the disk finalizes itself, and even DVD-RWs say that they are closed and unable to write to. How would I do this?

Yeah, I thought of that and ordered a 4 gig stick off of eBay. But this DVD deal is just a quick fix.

But while we're on the topic of that, how exactly would I install a game to a flash drive? I mean, would you have to mount the ISO on the drive and then install the game, or would there be a way of simply installing a game like, say, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (from a legit copy, which I actually did buy, not kidding! ) straight to the drive and not needing the disk to play it?

You could mount the install ISO with a virtual disc program, but I don't think installing to a disc would work, especially if the game utilizes the Registry. (Plus, if it needs write access to the volume, every computer you will use will need a DVD burner of some sort.)

A flash drive will work better, but it still leaves the registry issue. You could also approach the school administration to see if they can arrange something for students with good grades. (Maybe an access account that can be deactivated if their grades suffer?)

The only rock-solid solution is to forget about the whole thing, but that's a drastic step. (I mean, no video games in school? The horror!)[size=0]</sarcasm>[/size]

man, they let you play FPS games with all the school shootings and what not? I mean, those games are rated Mature and aren't exactly wholesome scholastic material.

I'm surprised too. In my programming class that I had first semester, my teacher would let us play games and emulators and stuff, but no FPS's (He said that after seeing a buddy of mine emulating Goldeneye. He just said that the school wouldn't like it; he himself owns a 360 and plays Halo and CoD 4 and stuff.)

In my info tech class, we are aloud to play Counterstrike on our lab computers (Ones that are not hooked up to the school network) and whatever shooter we want, though we don't play legit copies We also play "The Specialists" and at the start of this school year, Halo until we all got bored of it. (Also Halo was not legit either)

It is obvious that I don't care about pirating.

But the only thing I won't pirate is Wii/PS3/360 games.

For a flash drive, try extracting the files from the ISO onto the flash drive and playing it off of that? Not sure if that would work, I don't play many games...

Same here, now we just occasionally play Unreal Tournament (original) since it's loaded on the school's server

for the windows registry problem there is a quick fix:

* at your home (I supposed you have the game installed there) :

click on start, click on run , writte "regedit".

search the game folder there (registry, not game files).

for example:

this is the folder for starcraft (at the registry)

HKEY_CUARENT_USER\software\Blizzard Entertairnment\starcraft

well, when you locate your game folder , hit "right mouse click on the folder" and then click on "export" it will export the folder and the parameters insede the folder to a file (filename.reg")

if you run the game from a different computer location ( for example, at your computer you run the game installed on (C:\), but at the school you run the game from a flash drive (H:\), you only have to edit the .reg file with notepad and change the game directory to the correct one)

then put the .reg file at the flash drive and go to school.


* at school computer: instert the flash drive , Run the .reg file, and run the game exe file, enjoy ^^




anyway IDK if the school computer will let you to insert modifications at the windows registry, anyway I hope you have luck

If they can't even save files without an admin password, I seriously doubt they can write to the Registry.

if its xp couldn't you remove the admin passwords with ntpassword?

about the XP password ,there is a software named : "Cia Commander" (it is a floopy boot disk that allow delete,change and restore XP passwords)

yeah, I know, maybe it doesn´t work.
but there is nothing to loose if he test it.
it depends from the game, for that reason I allways prefered .ini files instead to the registry for save/load configs and parameters
