Xbox 1 DVD drive
If I buy a new DVD drive for my Xbox 1, will it work with it fine right away or will I have to do something special? My other one wouldn't open any longer so I want to purchase another off eBay, but will it work with the chipset?

They arent THAT bad, just cant read CD-Rs and some other media.timmeh87 wrote:avoid that Thompson crap. if its used its probably already half broken.
My friend's Thomson was sitting out opened for like over a year, laser exposed to dust, and had dust caked to the grease that was used to lubircate the gears, and worked 100%, hell worked better than the Thomson mine in my modded xbox.

You bought the best DVD drive you can get for an Xbox.Turknatr12 wrote:Ya its a samsung. I bought it it, and is new I think. SDG-605
How much did ya pay, I normally see these go on llama.com for like $50-$60 mabey a little more, but thats only when there in stock, and those suckers sell like crazy, although llama.com tends to overprice stuff. ($16 bucks for a 5 device ATA166 cable, used to be $25).
I have been trying to find an broken xbox with a working Samsung since I started getting into xbox modding.
At a Halo 3 LAN party, a few people brought their Original Xboxs, and in total we had 3, each had a differant brand DVD drive, my Thomson was the only one that ejected properly, the other needed to be hit for them to open. One xbox had a Phillips, and one had a Samsung, I was almost tempted to ask the guy if I could swap out that Samsung with my working Thomson, cause I knew a trick to fix the eject problem (The magnet that holds the disc on the spindle was too powerful, so a thick peice of tape would fix that.
Thanks for that, my semi-non-working Xbox has a Samsung and it sticks, I just wiggled the tray a bit to fix it before, I'll have to tape it.Jongamer wrote:One xbox had a Phillips, and one had a Samsung, I was almost tempted to ask the guy if I could swap out that Samsung with my working Thomson, cause I knew a trick to fix the eject problem (The magnet that holds the disc on the spindle was too powerful, so a thick peice of tape would fix that.

Yeah, just be sure to put it on the thing that presses down on the disc, not on the thing that spins the disc.vskid wrote:Thanks for that, my semi-non-working Xbox has a Samsung and it sticks, I just wiggled the tray a bit to fix it before, I'll have to tape it.Jongamer wrote:One xbox had a Phillips, and one had a Samsung, I was almost tempted to ask the guy if I could swap out that Samsung with my working Thomson, cause I knew a trick to fix the eject problem (The magnet that holds the disc on the spindle was too powerful, so a thick peice of tape would fix that.
just makin sure you understood me correctly.
I have never done the trick myself, but the people over at xbox-scene say it works wonders.
Also keeping a disc in the drive will help it eject also.

It cost me about $42. I am modding my xbox because I bet my bud $50 I could take his dead X-box and make a super cool laptop (I get to keep it too!). I have taken the plunge into the xbox before, so I know what I am doing, but this one I got from my bud. It went from not working to almost perfect just buy buying a new hard drive and DVD drive. I am adding no mod-chips, because I want to still pwn on xbox live (halo 2 still has over 10,000 players on average!)
