The NEXT Bacteria project - The Interchangeable Multi-System

Post by bacteria »

I still have lots of work to do on my GP2x project, and I will continue with it until it is completed, which means it will be a number of weeks before I start this new project. I am very good at planning, and constructing projects in my head to very good detail and then converting them into real projects.

Anyway, I thought I would give you guys forward warning of my next, and what I consider to me my ultimate console project system.

My next project? I will make a universal and interchangeable multi-system. My idea is that I will make a case in two halves, one part will house purely the PSone screen, all the buttons (including extras for the various systems), D-pad and joystick (the joystick will be a pain due to size). This will be made as slim as possible.

The other half will be the console itself, which will slot onto the screen half - on top of it (hence both parts of the system need to be as slim as possible, so the overall height is fine). This will mean using a male connector with about 30-40 pins from the screen (I need to work out precisely how many), and each console top connecting into the case construction from a male plug. I will use these pins to connect directly to the different power voltages, negatives and common wires, joystick and D-pad connectors, buttons, video lines (RGB/composite), audio, etc - everything in other words to connect a console to power, screen, speakers and controls.

The idea is that I can have one case with one PSone screen, buttons and controls to use on whatever system I throw at it. I make the console top part as slim as possible, and it slots into the main casing. I also want the whole of the game cart to be held internally rather than sticking out of the top or back of the console - although the N64 will need a "bump" in the case to take the 20mm thick cart.

Hard to describe the project, I hope you get a feel for what I am describing. I could have waited before announcing this project to after I have worked out measurements more precisely, especially as it is a very challenging one, but I thought it would be more fun to announce my intentions for the project first and gauge reaction. I will start the project in the N64 section (as part one of the project will be N64) and give a full guide with progress pics, as before.

I intend to make this system with removable flat systems for the N64, GBA (remove it from old project yet again!), MegaDrive and a good TV plug'n'play system I have. Four projects in one - interchangeable! I might go for a fifth system for the fun of it if I complete the rest - SNES too.

I will, when I start this project, be starting with the N64. Preliminary calculations indicate the system may finish at a reasonable height - top of case: 2mm, PSone screen and mobo and lee-way: 11mm, back of screen case: 2mm; top of console case: 2mm, N64 system, including completely enclosing an N64 cart (plus N64 mobo, controller, fan, heatsinks, wiring, memory card, expansion pack, etc at: 13mm, bottom of console case: 2mm. This totals 32mm in total thickness, although the part containing the N64 cart and cart slot internally will need to be 20mm thick (extra 7mm in addition to the 13mm for the system electronics) but as this will be in the middle of the case at the end so isn't important - or better still, I make a recess in the screen half to allow for this, so there is no "bump" in the casing! The only problem issue will be that the N64 joystick is fatter than 1mm thick, so I may need to see what methods or alternative joysticks I need to use to have a thin one so I can mount it 11mm or less height with the screen.

The N64 system should end up a total of 32mm which is comfortable to hold, the GBA and plug'n'play alternatives above should be closer to the 30mm mark or maybe a bit less still.

The N64 part of the project is the hard part of this project so I will do it first; if my calculations are right and I can make the N64 part as slim as I think I can, then the rest of the project is plain sailing. Make no mistake, this is an ambitions project with an extra layer of issues, problems and forward planning attached - quite a challenge, including case making. If my calculations are off my as much as 5-8mm then the case will be too high to hold properly and there is no further point in pursuing this idea - I will make separate projects instead then which I know can be slim enough. Image

If I fail to make this project viable, I can easily revert to making a slimline N64p, which is not a problem if this happens, I do however want to make something more "click'n'play" and unique, like this project could be; and with this design, only need one screen for everything rather than one screen per system, which is quite expensive.

That's a great idea bacteria! Are you going to be using perspex again for the case? If so, I have a great thing you can use for the side walls instead of your perspex again. It's thin, strong, and flexable (can be bent to go around the perimeter of the perspex plates). Its stainless aluminum stripping designed for use with counter edging or something. I'll take a picture. BRB.

I don't want to make an "I'm leaving" thread, but I've sort of lost interest in this board. So if you notice that I'm gone, that's why.

Brilliant! If anyone can pull it off, I know bacteria can. You've certainly proven yourself capable many times over in the past few months.

What are you going to be using for batteries?

Also, IDE connectors will provide you with 40 pins for the interconnection -- I'd use a male IDE header for the screen/power/controls module, and then use old IDE cables for the console side.

Will this be common ground for the controls? Since not all pads and plug-n-plays have common grounds, you might consider having two pins for each button, then connect one side together if a pad/console has a common ground. I seem to recall one of my plug-n-plays not having common ground, so you should check that if you haven't already.

How are you going to have the two halves be held together, but easy to take apart?

dudex77 -

khaag - Yes, perspex again, I was intending to use 2mm for the case tops and bottoms and thick 4mm or even 5mm for the sides, so it will be really rigid. I can make runners in the console sides (like you get in bedroom chest of drawers) to slide it in place to the screen and connnector and out again.

theelk - :)

Life of Brian
- Thanks for the vote in confidence and kind words! I am looking forward to this project.

tom61 - Batteries - options I see are:

1) Mains power only, no need for batteries.
2) Each console section to have its own batteries (to run themselves and the screen too), so if they run out on one system you can pop in another and play that instead. Mains power will also be the other option to power the system.

Considering the fact I intend the screen half to be only as thick as needed to hold the PSone screen and its mobo, there is no space for extras like batteries by the time buttons/tact switches, D-pad and joystick are included.

Given the height of an AA cell is 14mm, they might represent the maximum height of cells I could use in the console part!

This means, to answer your question, option 2 above seems to make sense, even though it would mean buying more sets of batteries (when I need to).

IDE connectors are a good idea, but I want a connection that I can push my system onto and it pops into place - for example, like a games cart does into a games slot. Maplins do various male and female connectors, I thought of getting these types.

I will allow for each button needing one or two connecting pins on the connectors, one if using a common ground, which fits the system controllers I have opened to date; but the facility of two per button if needed, to cover that base. Good point.

Last part of your query, think of a bedroom cabinet drawer sliding to home. Securely in place when pushed in, pops out, doesn't fall apart or separate. I can make such a design!!

When I start the project I will upload some pics on the new thread to illustrate.

Just use a multi-pin plug for the power, and keep the batteries in the base. Having separate batteries for every console would be ridiculous.

This project is going to rock.

But are you going to butcher the N64 Advance to make it?

Firstly, thanks for the interest in this thread and for your comments, please keep them coming. One of the reasons I posted this thread was to get feedback which might influence my design and project, before I start planning precise dimensions for the system. Skyone helped me hone an idea I was considering (as below) which now I have reflected on, and will materialise in the project. I value feedback, so please keep ideas and comments coming!

Skyone - No space or height for the batteries in the base, please bear in mind that the case will be as small as is reasonable and the height of the screen part will be the height of the PSone screen and its mobo (10-11mm) - the perspex base will be directly on top of it. I agree that having batteries in the screen section is sensible, but can't be done if integrated into a sealed case (however I have an option, as below). There will be very little space in the screen section for anything, and no height even for AA cells (not practical anyway, I don't intend to use them for this!). This means the only options are:

1) Mains power only. No issues then, but not ideal.

2) Use Li-ions cells like the Sony NPF950 cells HERE

I am considering these cells quite seriously. I got a cheap one a while back (only 4650mAh), not used it at the moment, however as I have one I can physically see how it would work in my portable. Each cell is 6600mAh, so two in parallel would give 13200mAh. They are also 7.2v.

Only downsides to these cells are that they are 38mm high, so I would need to make shapes in the base of the PSone screen half for the battery, one on the top left and one on the top right of the screen, extending through the console half and extending from the back of the case by about 6mm or so (the batteries are 38mm high) - no issue, and I can make perspex whatever shape I want. The other issue is weight: about 580g at the top of the screen and less at the base to counter, however I can compensate for this with the console half enough to stop this being an issue. There are two slots in the sides at the top of the PSone screen mobo, the edge of the batteries can be pushed home against them. I can make it so that each cell can be popped out of the case for recharging, before popping back into the portable.

As I said, I am looking at using these cells very seriously - unless anyone has better ones, with charger. The dimensions of the cells I am referring to are: 70.85 x 38.4 x 58.56 mm. If you can recommend alternatives, high mAh, no longer or wider than the above but ideally under 38mm, please advise.

I have just ordered more perspex, another 6 sheets of 2mm (will give me 12 sheets in total), I need 2 for a case and struts. I also ordered 2 sheets of 3mm for the sides, these will be very rigid.

gamemasterAS - Very kind of you!

nightwheel - Thanks for the support.

I will have to "butcher" the Nintendo 64 Advance for the GBA Transverter, I have no option as these are impossible to buy now. In saying this, I do have one other option which I will try first - I bought a GBA-TV Converter a few months back cheaply for about £6, but as you need to install it behind the pins on the video cable, it never seemed to connect and work, I will try to hard wire it to the GBA wires instead; however if the picture area is smaller than the PSone screen, then yes, the Nintendo 64 Advance will be stripped of the GBA part.

Valium - This isn't a pipe dream project, I will be doing my best to make it a reality. My opinion only, not meant this comment to be conceited (I am not that), but if I can pull this project off it could be the "ultimate", not on a technical level but on a practical and cost level for a system; it would make portablizing (if others adopted this method) easier and a lot cheaper as you don't need to buy a new screen and batteries for each project - just the system mobo, which on an old console is very cheap indeed. On e-bay you can buy a console for about £10-£20 for old systems (inc postage) - better than paying up to £80 for cells, £30 for a screen plus the console price (£10-£20 for each additional portable instead of up to about £120-£130 each).

I am hoping that others will have a go at making portables too from my walkthrough.

Talking of such, two trains of thought - I will be doing my comprehensive guide and pics as normal, but if any of you would be interested in making your own from my plans, let me know. If there is positive response to this offer, I would then be more descriptive in the postings as to the dimensions I use, post more pics, etc, so you can make yours to the same design.

I am very much of the opinion that I prefer to offer people the tools and knowledge to craft their projects rather than just show a final product to impress; makes portable console making more for the masses rather than keeping it a "black art" for the few, as the expression goes.

Ok, I have about 1 hour left today for my GP2x project before I need to get myself ready for work, so I will make a start on the cotton ear buds and tin foil mod to make the contacts auto-select when the screen is rotated.

Hah! Nice, I actually had a similar idea once, but I didn't/am not planning on making it real, so it's all up to you :P

If you can do it, it's gonna be awesome.

This will become the greatest benheck thing ever if you pull it off and will undoubtedly deploy a load of noobs from digg  If the GBA converter isn't used would you consider selling it to me?

Thanks very much, appreciated.

Sure!, I would sell the GBA converter to you, but it needs to be hard wired as it didn't want to click in to install. If/once I get it working in due course I will put it on sale if you like, although I will have to sell it with the GBA too as it needs modding.
