Network help

Post by ghosstt »

ok, my PC is hardwired to the internet. Goes form the modem, to the wireless router, to this PC. My mom connects to the internet via out wireless router. We don't have any network files or anything (never set up sharing), she justs gets the internet that it broadcasts. But now when she uses a certain program1(rhymes with timewire) all of her songs actually show up in my itunes, under a playlist "Mom's TimeWire Songs". How did this happen?

Maybe you should open your settings in said program and turn iTunes sharing off. :|

He said to turn off iTunes sharing in ThymeCrier on her computer. (Completely separate form iTunes and your machine.)

why don't you read the topic? I'm not asking how to not make it happen (though thanks skyone and bic for your help), im asking how it happened if i don't have sharing on, and we arn't even really on a connected network. Gosh, how thick can you get?

I don't think ThymeCrier's iTunes sharing has anything to do with Windows fire sharing (besides you can get into a machine really easily either way).

And yes, you are on a connected network. You're both plugged into the same router, just your mom's PC uses RF instead of copper.

Have you taken into account, the possibility that someone is pulling a prank on you or something like that?

I'm fairly sure that it is Limewire. Limewire forces your Mom's computer to share files(so that they get decent up/down speeds), and sticks all of her files in a shared folder which iTunes (quite nicely) detects for you without any trouble. It has nothing to do with your computer, and your Mom's computer would have had to specifically disable it for it not to work (which would cause Limewire not to work as well.)

So basically its kind of back dooring a shared file to me without initializing the whole windows sharing process?

My understanding of the process (which is vague at best) is that Itunes has a feature so that it can share (stream) its music on the network. It is an Itunes specific service, and unrelated to windows file sharing, as someone else already mentioned.

Limewire seems to also support this service, which allows other users on the network with Itunes to listen to your music. The music, however, dosent move anywhere. It stays on the computer where it lives, and only streams to other computers when you listen to it.

I think this thread was over at post 2.
