External Burner keeps rebooting my PC

I just picked a External CD-RW burner up for $15 today, and after installing all the drivers (It was OLD, pre-windows xp) and I put in a music CD to test it out, spins up and opens Windows media player, BAM computer reboots.

Ok, mabey somthing weird happened, so I put the music CD in again and it spins up, opens Windows Media player, and play the first track for about 1-2min before rebooting the computer again.

Ok now I know somthing is wrong, so I jump to burning a CD-r, it gets 3/4 through the CD (Approx 10min, it's a slow 4x burner) then reboots the computer again.

I know it is not a overheating problem, becuase Motherboard manager program i have only show the CPU get as high as 135 degrees F under heavy strain.

Any ideas on why it is doing this?

How old are the drivers? If they're pre-XP, you're just asking for trouble by running them on the newer system. See if there are any newer drivers for it, if you can. (I think it might have something to do with the hardware abstraction layer built into the NT kernel; the old 98 drivers don't expect it. That's my theory anyway.)

Did you even need drivers? I have an old one that sounds similar to yours and XP recognized it as an external burner automatically.

You probably could have picked up an internal DVD burner for $25...

Why bother with such an old, slow drive?

Well I didnt know the speed of it and it sounded like a decent deal to me, so I took it.

Plus I just opened it and has and IDE to USB adapter, do you think I can put any IDE drive in there and have it work?

Yes It needed drivers, because I was not gonna install some ancient software to run the thing, and the driver I was using was for XP users.

I am going to go try this on another computer now.

EDIT: Works, and I also tried switching out the burner with an internal HP CD-RW burner, and it only picks that up as a plain CD-Drive, and with a CD-R in the drive windows gives me an incorrect function error, but i guess that is because it is running off the Que! CD-RW burner`s drivers.

Im almost tempted to try a Hard drive

Heh, the Hard drive works in the IDE to USB from that burner, just slow as hell through a USB port on my old Dell.

Yes it should work,I also have another usb-ide board. (from an old CD usb burner)

those ide-usb boards are very very usefull.

you can use them with any IDE hddÂ´s and any IDE optical drives.

but remember set the device jumper to master mode.

I also have a USB 2.5 hdd drive (the hdd for latops), some day the internal hdd crashed and IÂ´m using now the usb-2.5 board to connect any 2.5 hdd drives.

Only bad thing is that with this IDE to USB board, I need a driver to be installed on every PC that I am gonna use it on.

mmm, that is very weird.
my boards use generic xp drivers without need thirdparty software.

do you have any photo of your board?

Nothing but a few resistors and the USB connector on the back. took one with flash and one without.

And there WAS a 2-pin connector connected to J6, but not to JP1.

those are mine

for small (2.5) disks

and this is like also usb- ide, like yours.

I used them on a lot of computers and with a lot of diferent devices, but them allways work, and doesnÂ´t ask for drivers.

mmm, I have some ideas.

first idea: try connect the board to a diferent usb port.

second idea: try connect the board to another computer

third idea: get devices that you know 100% worked at normal ide conection (pc motherboard ide ports, no usb), and then put those devices on the usb board on a diferent computer, and make some tests, like write big files on hdd, record cds... ect
