So, was the limitation Datel's hardware; or the PSP's firmware?

No way to know for sure without having one of these things to test with. There was a limitation of 4 gigabytes for memory sticks, but that was due to using the 1.50 firmware as the base for the custom firmwares. Suposedly, that limitation is gone as long as you're using one of the newer firmwares that isn't based on 1.50.

The Neo Flash adapter looks like you can use whatever size CF card you want. Their original advertisements said that it would only support up to 4 gigs, but they also said that it was a limitation on the PSP and not the converter.

I think the PSP can support up to 32 Gb.
