From what I read, it runs on Windows, so I'd assume the Mac version will run on at least Tiger.

Because in order to make it so sleek there's no flat edges to put ports on. There's a flap that comes down with the three ports but apparently they didn't want to make it too big.
jperryss wrote:And, in typical Apple fashion, the battery isn't user-replaceable. That may be (barely) tolerable with an iPod, but they were pushing it with the iPhone. Now they're doing it with a $1700 (up to $3K) laptop? Come on!
I agree that this makes no sense. You can replace the batteries on the other MacBooks, how is this any different?

I also agree about the general lack of ports being a bad move. Maybe if it had a docking station or something that with a port breakout it would be almost ok but obviously that's not happening.

I also agree about the ultraportable thing. I was expecting something more along the lines of the old 12" Powerbook. A good variety of ports, optical drive, etc. People want as many features as possible in as small a package as possible, not a thinner version of the MacBook with less ports.

(Yes, for the record this is me ripping on an Apple product. I see where they're coming from, but it just doesn't interest me at all.)

So form wins over function again? Wow, Apple finally took it to the next step: hindering functionality for looks. I mean they could have made a similar little door on the other side with 2 more USB ports right? Everyone likes symmetry...

They've been doing this for a while, and they can usually pull off minimalism well, but come on Apple, we can't survive on a touchpad alone!

I needs me my USB ports.

if i were to get a newish laptop i would probably go with either another fujitsu (convertable tablet or the uber leet U810) or a toshiba tablet, my prime deciders for a laptop are it MUST have a trackpoint, i cannot stand a touchpad i HATE them, and preferably also a touchscreen (you get used to having it, im sure ketchup has noticed this too! its so handy to be able to poke the screen to change tabs or hit icons etc!) and cannot be bigger than 12-13 inches, anything beyond that is useless as a portable device imo. i dont need uber graphics or a huge screen, i use my laptop in class, on break in the lounge at school or at home on the couch or in bed or while im in the car (not driving of course) i dont want something thats a foot wide lol) and i dont need to be able to play games on it either, IM, Skype web browsing image and video viewing and little else is all i do on mine.

so tl/dr triton likes small portable moderatly powered laptops that cost under 1000$ and preferably under 500, the U810 is awesome and small and 1.2ghz intel processor that is WAY better than the weaksauce transmeta in the MM20 and MM10s, avoid those if you want more than 500mhz pentium III type performance (900mhz transmeta is mebe equal to 500-600mhz intel from what i read)

Typical Mac, too expensive for what you get.

We took a ton a features out, but it looks cool, $1800 please.

Having to carry around an external USB disc drive doesn't seem so ultra portable. Kind of defeats the purpose.

First of all, *ahem*

I'd say my only gripes are that Apple didn't include a bigger array of ports and that they didn't allow a lesser, 32GBish SSD. Other than that, it's pretty awesome. Oh and one more thing, that hasn't been mentioned anywhere that I've read - Why the hell is there an eject key on the keyboard when there's no optical drive? :P I mean I guess it's for remote disc or something, but still, kinda strange?

Wow, sometimes the arguments here don't make much sense to me.

It is a small portable computer! It is not a desktop replacement, and it doesn't claim to be hence: "Ultra-portable".

Would you expect a dozen USB ports from an Asus Eee?

As for them claiming it to be the thinnest laptop in the world, marketing departments claim crap like this all the time, get over it. Also, the SHARP MM20 is discontinued now, so it isn't really a competitor.

Battery replacement is inconvenient, but not a deal breaker as they will do free replacement (so will apple certified technicians I assume).

1 USB port isn't a problem as you can get a 1 - 4 USB port for about $20 now.

I am personally a fan of thin light computers. I have a desktop, and wouldn't want to try and get a laptop to replace it.

Having Solid state HD is great (expensive, but worth it for the battery life).

Ethernet: not an issue, I can't remember the last time I plugged even my desktop in.

Boot-camp: not an issue, it isn't a gaming machine, so why would you put Windows on it? Use Parallels if you really need Windows for something.

No audio input: again, it's a portable machine, not a recording station...

Non-user serviceable... not an issue, it isn't a machine that is made for modding, there is a sacrifice, a tiny machine like this requires a huge amount of engineering, and there is no reason to make it user serviceable.

As far as form over function, the main form decision that was made was for size! I emphasize that this is a SMALL laptop, made to be small!

I don't think it is a perfect product, but if you look at the hardware, and the size of the machine, keeping in mind what the goals were, it is a very worthwhile laptop, and not overpriced.

No offense, but this is the worst laptop in the world.

$1900 or something or this piece of crap.

Form over functionality, it looks unsturdy and easily breakable. It's a waste of money with Apple's gimmicky crap.

One USB port is also stupid.

You know as soon as this thing comes out. Some one it going to mod it by adding more USB ports.

The problem is that it isnt a small laptop. Its a thin laptop. Theres a difference. I mean, when is the last time when you said, hell, I would really like to take my laptop, but its not thin enough to fit in my backpack? If you have, the air would probably have snapped in the backpack anyways. The things saves almost no space over a macbook. Also, the problem isnt with bootcamp, its the fact that windows is almost impossible to install. I dont even wanna think about something like WoW that has multiple disks over wifi *shudders*

The battery replacement is free, but the new battery cost 129 bucks and you have to send your laptop off.

I think more then 1 USB port is required.

I plug my pc and laptop into a wired connection at home and at about half the hotels I stayed at over vacation.

It's thin, but I don't think it has the world's smallest footprint (how much desk space it takes in square inches).
Would you expect a dozen USB ports from an Asus Eee?
The Eee has three USB ports. So does my Pavillion dv5000. Three or more is fine, two is okay, one is an inconvenience.
Battery replacement is inconvenient, but not a deal breaker as they will do free replacement (so will apple certified technicians I assume).
That's good. I wonder if that will apply to other products?
1 USB port isn't a problem as you can get a 1 - 4 USB port for about $20 now.
That's still another thing you have to buy and carry around. They could have done away with all the tapered ends and put in a proper assortment of ports like everyone else.
Having Solid state HD is great (expensive, but worth it for the battery life).
Aw yeah. 8)
Ethernet: not an issue, I can't remember the last time I plugged even my desktop in.
It may not be an issue for you, but I always use Ethernet. WiFi is way too insecure; you can get programs that can crack a WEP key in under 5 minutes. I only use wireless when I'm playing games (because our network blocks most ports) or in class (because they don't want us plugging our laptops into their internal network).
Boot-camp: not an issue, it isn't a gaming machine, so why would you put Windows on it? Use Parallels if you really need Windows for something.
But don't you need to have a copy of Windows to run Parallels? The problem isn't Boot Camp, it's the lack of an optical drive. I don't think you can install Windows off a USB disc drive without some tinkering. And maybe someone would want to run Windows on it so they didn't have to buy all of their software again just to get Mac native versions?
Non-user serviceable... not an issue, it isn't a machine that is made for modding, there is a sacrifice, a tiny machine like this requires a huge amount of engineering, and there is no reason to make it user serviceable.
So there's no reason to make it possible for the user to add RAM, upgrade the hard drive, or get a second battery so they can go longer without plugging in? Mmkay... When you buy your next desktop machine, have the entire case welded shut. It's pretty much the same concept.
As far as form over function, the main form decision that was made was for size! I emphasize that this is a SMALL laptop, made to be small!
Thin? yes. Small? Like I said there's smaller laptops out there that are more user serviceable.
I don't think it is a perfect product, but if you look at the hardware, and the size of the machine, keeping in mind what the goals were, it is a very worthwhile laptop, and not overpriced.
Yes, it's an okay computer for what it is. However, it's not something I'd want to use on a daily basis. No Ethernet, no optical drive, and only one USB port are real turn-offs. Plus I can't stand it when computers are too wide and thin. It just doesn't feel sturdy.

It's basically a regular MacBook that's been run over by a steamroller. It looks like it has about the same footprint (judging by the margins around the keyboard), the screen's basically the same, but the MacBook isn't as much of a closed box.

My opinion: it looks like a fun toy but it won't fit my needs. Stick a SSD hard drive in a regular MacBook and you'll get pretty much the same thing.

Oh, most definitely. Apple will entrust their entire laptop line to one $2000 laptop.

Sorry man, you're out of luck!
