super gameboy woes
OK, my local used game store gave me a whole load of stuff like game genies, a 32X (I know right, FREE!), and a super gameboy because he didn't like to sell add ons (huh?). Anyway, i cleaned the super gameboy as best that I could and actually took it apart with a gamebit and cleaned the pins as well as I could with alcohol and a q-tip. However, it gives me the strangest glitch I have ever encountered. When I start it up, the game loads, but everything is SOOOO SSSLLLOOOWWWW. I could make a sandwich between turning the system on and having the menu load, I'm not kidding. Are the auxiliary pins (the ones on the side like the super FX games use) used to speed this thing up? The chipset seems to be fine, but I'm not so sure about the bottom and the gameboy side pins. Also, does anyone know a good way to clean the gameboy slot pins? a q-tip won't fit and even a toothpick barely fits, so what in gods name could you use? Its not like I play gameboy games all the time, but I spent a LONG time cleaning this thing up and I would like for it to work after all that.

well, the main chip is self aligning via internal plastic tabs like any SNES game and the gameboy slot is soldered to the board, so no dice there either. I'm thinking I might just have to go medieval on the pins, that seems to fix any game that doesn't work right at first, the only times it hasn't worked is when one game had a corroded capacitor and another time when the ROM board was actually cracked (quite a feat to do and not crack the outer case if I do say so myself). I can't imagine the main chips are damaged if its working at all, so its gotta be those super FX-style pins on the sides of the main chip. I was just wondering if maybe there was some internal or external switch on the Super Gameboy I didn't know about or if there was some generation of incompatible Super NES or something (I have one I got new in ?1994?, original style, not the mini).SZF2001 wrote:Maybe you could take it apart and put it back together again, making sure everything is aligned properly?

All I can say is IT'S definatly the Edge connector pins, I was fooling around one day and stuck the Super Gameboy on the Gamegenie (Which does not have any edge connectors on it at all), and booted it up, and Super Mario Lane ran at like 5fps if even that.
I don't know what to tell ya if you cleaned them.

yeah, I cleaned them pretty extensively, but maybe there is something else I'm not seeing, I guess I should check the pinouts for the side pieces for cracks in the chip, as I'm sure that could do it. Good to know its not the gameboy slot though, that would be such a female of the dog species to try to clean, well anymore than I can do with a toothpick with a bit of cotton wrapped around it. It may just be, I hate to say it, permanently ruined because after all it was covered in spider webs and had tons of gunk in it before I started cleaning it. At least I didn't pay for it, but I won't give up just yet. Hopefully my free 32X I just spend a ton of time cleaning will fair better (it was actually OK, I just like to detail my stuff till it looks new).Jongamer wrote:All I can say is IT'S definatly the Edge connector pins, I was fooling around one day and stuck the Super Gameboy on the Gamegenie (Which does not have any edge connectors on it at all), and booted it up, and Super Mario Lane ran at like 5fps if even that.

thats what I think too, although I can't figure out where the problem is coming from specifically. The pins seem pretty clean and I don't see anything that looks terribly dirty or anything, I guess I'll just have to keep looking.prawny1 wrote:i read on the net that the edge connectors in some carts connect to a co procesor on some carts, so i can only asume the edge pins on a super game boy are linked to the internal gameboy procesor
