NDS considerations and possible NDS link port

Post by nitro2k01 »

I'm going to buy an NDS, and since I'm going for a preused one, I'm in the choice between DSPhat and DSLite. What are the differences between the models?
I'm not looking for the common list (Size, screen intensity, battery life etc) but rather things that have to do with hackability. Can either one of them do something that the other one can't? Anything I should be aware of, eg different quality of the wireless circuits or something like that?

Another thing I'm wondering about is the possible existence of (connectors for) a link port in the DS. Martin Korth says something about this. Have the other pins been found on the mainboard? If so, is there any difference in availability between phat and lite?

Why bother with a link port, they do it all over Wi-fi now.

Both have really bad range though, compared to any PCMCIA card in a laptop (I could see 15 networks at one point with my laptop, where mt DS (Phat) could see zero). Now excuse me as I lean up against the window really awkwardly because that's the only place in my grandma's house my laptop can maintain a connection to anybody's wi-fi. >_<

Battery life on a lite kicks the crap out of the phat (although both are pretty damn impressive (way better than my GP2X, and from what I've heard, the PSP (yay parenthesis!))) The lowest brightness on the lite is more than ample, and the colors and viewing angle are much better than the phat. One place where the Phat beats the lite though, is in GBA compatability. I frequently play GBA games on my DS Phat, and having them stick out if I had a lite would bug the living daylights out of me. However, expect any accessories to only support the lite as Nintendo likes to make accessories pretending their old systems all evaporated. (I had to shove the RAM expansion for the web browser into a random GBA cart in order to get it to fit into my Phat, lots of fun )

Plus, I think the lite, and newer phats uses a new firmware, making older passthrough devices (allows you to load ds code from gba slot) obselete.

I have my reasons. The serial port is not just a serial port, but a bi-directional 4-pin parallell port, which can be used for a lot of fun hacking. And even so, I could possibly be interested in GBA connectivity.

In the end I bought a phat after all. (Because I got pretty cheap and I'm short on money) Then I got an M3Real with a 2 GB memory card.
Someone was going to sell me a DSLite black, which was hot, but he didn't call back for three days, so I ditched him. :/

I would 100% go for a fat one. Especially buying used.

Why?

They are MUCH more reliable. The lites have all sorts of hinge-related breaks and the likes. I've yet to see very many broken phats, and they've been out for at least a good year longer.

plus according to foxx if your gonna use it for wifi network scanning and crap the phat has like 4-6x the range of the lite, and its easier to add an antenna to and such
