I am thinking of making a GC portable and I have a few problems to overcome.

• 1. The laser is really big and I have disassembled it and it is all needed but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make the disc drive a bit thinner
  2. What should I do for batteries, I was hoping to keep the "uCube" rather small.
  3. I wanted to know if the name "uCube" has been taken

I now reserve the name "uCube" for my portable game system.

For 2, if you have the money for them, Lithium Polymer batteries are the smallest size for the capacity. They are also the most expensive. (Unless Silver Ion batteries have come out in buyable form.)

I was planning on using Lithium. I don't really get why people freak over them. I have one sitting in my lap quite often and I don't think twice about it (anyway, that's why you make the buyer of your portable sign a legal disclaimer ). I am not familiar with silver ion, could you give me a link to info about them please?

If you're meaning a laptop, thats because it has protection (unless it has faulty cells). Lithium cells don't like it when you abuse them, intentionally or not. They will abuse you back. NiMH and NiCd will just vents gases if you abuse them, they're not going to burst into flames. But as long as you take the necessary precautions, you should be fine.

Silver ion is out of the question, he was just stating that there might be something more expensive than lithium ion. They probably cost so much, you don't even want to know.

Anyone with any sense also puts battery protection in their portable too. Also, I do want ot know what silver ion batteries cost.

Thank you. Actually, I am planning on naming my portable the "µCube". I like it's name. Any opinions, maybe rate the name on a scale of 1-10?

I think Triton successfully slimmed down the disk drive a good amount, but I can't find his thread right now. I found the one by him that me and a couple other people kinda hi-jacked with a discussion about a IDE/USB interface for the 'cube that replaces the disk drive, something else you might be interested in. The thread we eventually split to about that can be found here. But I thought he had a different thread with a bunch of pictures... maybe that was someone else... hmm...

Thanks for the input on my ideas. Anyone else have any ideas about slimming down the disc drive? I don't see how you could since the thickest part is the laser and you can't just cut it up.
