Make 'em or play 'em? What do you prefer?

Post by Life of Brian »

I was determined to play Super Mario World all the way through today due to school being canceled and not having anything better to do, but I've got to take a break!

I'm curious - do you like making portables more or playing them? This question includes DS and PSP (plus homebrew, if you like) in addition to playing homemade portables.

Also, how many hours have you logged on portables you've made? I've been attempting to defeat "Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" recently, so I'm guessing my total on my most recent SNESp alone is probably around the fifty hour mark. Anybody else actually play on the portables they've made?

I know I can't really talk from personal experience but I think that the novelty wares off quickly with most of these portable since they can be emulated by the PSP. Though with the few that are consoles noone can emulate in portable form I figure they made them for a reason.

I really enjoy making portables more than playing them. It's just the whole getting to come up with new ideas. The games are just the reward to all of that.

I don't really play my portables to much, I played through windwaker on my GCp,beat super mario bros plenty of times on my NESp, and played a few hours of Chrono Trigger on my snesp mkII. but those are pretty much it except for when the power went out and I played smash bros on my N64p,

I do prefer building them though

I think you can beat Super Mario World in several minutes, someone did it; I can't see the point of this though as you lose the fun of the game.

To answer your question, I haven't spent much time playing games lately, even on PC. About the only game I have played much is Donkey Kong 64 with my wife, as she loves the game (but can't do the harder bits). We are on 49% of the game completion at the moment! I did boot up my Nintendo 64 Advance recently a few times and played a couple of hours of Mario Party; and another game - a crap snowboarding game.

At the moment, I am focussed on my modding projects and on this forum. I will be playing my GP2x project when it is finished, for sure; and I then intend to make a slim N64p and intend to play that a fair bit. I want to make the new case slim and make the case with no marks and sleek (incentive for the project). I bought a couple of N64's at a car boot sale recently for £3 each ($6) so intend to use one of these for the mod. My PDA is on permanently - gadget (boys and toys). It is really neat - press the button, it comes on, beeps at the computer and the computer beeps back; updates itself and MS Outlook, tells me any tasks for the day - great - then when you turn the PDA to standby it beeps off and the computer beeps back (i'm so sad)!!

When I have done my existing projects I intend to play on them much more, then get around to my PC games (C&C Tiberium Wars, Quake 3, etc), I have a lot of PC games to get around to play!

It is immensely fun to make a portable or general modding and hacking; it gives a lot of pleasure and intellectual and creative challenges to overcome - all part of the fun.

I'd rather make them. I enjoy building something with my own hands rather than playing a game with them.

If I ever actually make a portable, I'll probably be more interested in the actual building of it more than the games. I just need some money.

I don't want to make an "I'm leaving" thread, but I've sort of lost interest in this board. So if you notice that I'm gone, that's why.
