USB 3.0

Post by dragon »

USB 3.0 under devolment.
One of the announcements to come out of the IDF keynote this afternoon was Pat Gelsinger's discussion and demonstration of USB 3.0 technology. Although still in the prototype stage, USB 3.0 is aiming for 10 times the bandwidth of current USB2.0 solutions, or approximately 5Gbps. Since this requires fiber optic cabling, USB 3.0 will add a length of optical data cable to the mix, though USB 3.0 will retain full compatibility with USB 2.0 (and, one assumes, USB 1.0 as well).

Wouldnt that make us the opposite of geeks? Or are you saying that we fail at trying to be geeks?

wusb is old, but this fiber optic thing is new to me.

I've heard of both, I just didn't care (I don't even have USB 2.0...). All I was pointing out was that the article was several months old.

hmm 5 Gb/s isn't close to the speed of SATA?

why not just replace SATA with set USB 3.0?

Stop hatin' on my old computer! :P I think its 1.1, actually. I think 2.0 came out around the same time as we got this computer, if we'd gotten it a few months later, it'd probably have 2.0. I'm gonna try to get my parents to let me build a new family desktop around tax return time, I'll find the parts and put it together, they'll pay for the parts. Theres not many pre-assembled computers that don't have Vista (XP forever!!), and it'll be cheaper (get exactly what we need).
