After being here for a few months now, I've decided to give a portable NES a try. This won't be for me, but for a friend of mine in Australia.
First off, I have a few questions. Since Australia uses the PAL regency, and I plan on using either a Yobo board, or a Super Joy 3 with a family converter or something of the like, what will I have to do to ensure Australian NES games work for her?
Do those LCD screens everyone uses for portables around here have regency encoding? I wouldn't imagine this actually being a problem, if I'm using an American Yobo or Super Joy, but just in case, I thought I'd ask.
How small is the Yobo board compared to the Super Joy? And how much mAh does the Yobo use? Voltage needed for both?
I will most likely be powering this with rechargeable AA's, and I'll be using khaag's 5'' screen pending the sale. Bondo-ing my own case, second player port, etc etc. Landscape style. I'll have pictures of possible case ideas once I have everything needed.
How small can I make this? I need it to be as small as possible otherwise it'll cost a small fortune for me to ship it. I know its possible for it to fit inside of a Gameboy, but with the cart connector instead of the built in games, what size do you think is possible?

Case idea.
I love the look of the PSone, and it feels good in my hands. It is also the only thing close by that would be possible to start with.
I'll be putting everything inside a PSone shell, bondo-ing it, and I have two choices. Leave the disk lid as it is, and have the screen inside where the laser assembly used to be, or cut out the part where the laser assembly was and integrate the screen into the disk lid.
With option A, the screen will have protection when not in use, but I'll have less space inside and vice versa for option B.
Edit: Does anyone know where I can order some Bondo online? I've been looking around here, but I haven't found anything. Likewise for a Dremel.

Absolutely Nothing. The Superjoy 3 plays PAL games by default, and has a PAL connector already on it.

Well, my screen's NTSC, and and Superjoy 3 outputs at least NTSC, so I don't see you having an issue.

Voltage for the Superjoy 3 is anything really. G-force got it very low (2-3Vish) and Mario started to glitch up but was still playable, I think. It can go up to more than enough. The adapter is at least 7 volts, and the SJ3 is unregulated.

Buy my screen, it's LED modded and I was basing my design off G-forces already-completed portable that ran off a SJ3, Screen pad, and 4 rechargeable AAs. You could probably use non-rechargeables without a problem.
You'd need to find another palyer port though, I think the PAL ones are different.

G-force crammed all of his into a GBO case, with little room to spare. Don't expect much smaller, but a NOACp will definitely be one of the smaller portables you'll see on this site.

On another note, does anyone have a PAL copy of Final Fantasy 1 they'd like to sell? I told Kateh I'd send a copy along with it so she could play it, and I need a game to test this with.

Couple changes and thoughts;
Replacing the rechargeable AA's with RC battery packs, I found a nice price for 4 7.2v 3800 mAh packs ($60!) I can fit about 2 in the case, maybe, which should give about 8 hours battery life, with an un-modded screen.
A nice thought I had for this was to add in A/V out with the unit, and making the controller pieces removable and able to connect together and then to the unit so that this portable, turns into a console with little trouble. Controller would be about 2.5'' x 1.5'' x .5''.
They use composite video in Australia don't they?
The removable controller should be fairly easy, all that needs to be inside it is the IC, 8 tact switches, and a few ports.
After Christmas I'll have about $830, after buying a few things for my fun, I should have about $500 left to screw around with, $80 for the batteries and a charger, $20 for a superjoy, maybe 100 for a few extra things, a dremel, bondo, etc. And with nothing really to do for a while, this beast should be finished soon.
