With the 'crash' tab, after the third try, the word processor opens...then it blows up.

The very first released version of Windows was internally called Windows 1.0, but it did not noticeably identify itself by number, it simply called itself "Windows". There were also 2.0, 2.03 and 3.0 before 3.1 and 3.11. Windows 95 was really just a renaming of Windows 4.0. Windows 98 is internally Windows 4.10. These are not inclusive of the Windows NT series, which is a separate branch of the "family tree" (or at least it was until merged back together in Windows XP).

I've finally found out why Red Alert Windows 95 Edition gives an error message saying "Only compatible with Windows 95, you have Windows 5.1" (I am running WinXP), Windows XP's codename is Windows NT 5.1, and thats a lie, as Red Alert Win95 edition runs perfect under WinME, and if the compatiblity is changed runs fine under Win2000 and WinXP

Well, Windows Me and below are based on DOS, which C&C needs. 2000 and XP use the NT Kernel, which is different.

XP doesnt use the NT kernal, thats only NT and 2000.

@Unidentified Assilant, have you set the compantablity settings set to 95 under properties on XP, I know thats one way to improve compatablity with older software.

I was just going to recomend that. I had some old games (like the origional civilization) that would only work if you set the compatability thing to win95. Just right click on the exe and there will be a drop down bar thing that allows you to chose the compatability.

are you sure? I know 2000 is based on NT, and XP is based on 2000.

Nope as XP was planned as far as I know to be the complete replacement for ME and/or 98 as the home user OS, 2000 came about as office workers liked using NT and as it became more popular and Microsoft could release NT as desktop OS and make more money 2000 was offically born.

XP was intended to be a replacement for both 2000 and 9x/ME. But if you look into the system files and stuff, it is NT 5.1. Basically XP is just a slightly faster 2000 with bug fixes (and new bugs :D ), a fancier GUI, and built-in "emulation" of older versions of Windows (AKA Compatibility Modes).
