If done well, it could be made with the dimensions of 4 1/2" W X 6 1/2" L (although it would be a tight fit) with a badass flip-up screen on a hinge with speakers built into the lid. Actually, that would be fun to make...
Is that the sound of turning gears that I'm hearing? ;)

no its perfect, just hold a GBA SP backwards you will see how cool it is. plus arranging it like a clamshell compresses it closer to a cube in shape which gives more volume per surface area so it is more efficient.

Just tried holding my SP upside down. It feels as bad as it looks. If you're gonna theorize a clamshell design, at least put the screen the right way. Oh, and your efficiency argument really doesn't stack up, seeing as making the screen fold up would actually increase surface area and the like, and even if it were folded down, the unit would be the same size as a portable that was configured with the screen normally.

it actually is more efficient when folded, it doesnt matter much when it is open because you are not going to store it while it is open, anyway i did the math, jerk... anyway the reverse clamshell thing was a joke since everyone was taking a dump on the normal clamshell idea. hence the camel taking a dook i drew (also lol, i tricked you into holding your GBA SP backwards, i did that before i drew that picture and it indeed sucks.)

What's with the attitude? We're all friends here.

Someone's got their panties in a bunch! Besides, what kind of math is involved with that, anyways? All you're doing with a hinge mechanism is making the case harder to construct, and trust me, making your first case is undoubtedly the most difficult trial of portablizing. And really, what's the point of adding more surface area to a portable when you open it? This isn't like an SP where you can make the motherboard the same size as the screen. You've already got a motherboard that's fairly large compared to that of factory handhelds, and shoving in speakers and buttons, the face of your portable is going to be about 8"x5". You'd be effectively doubling this if you made a screen that folded up. For a size reference, take 5 or 6 issues of Game Informer and stack them up, hold them at the bottom, and put a rock in the middle. That's about the size and weight a portable like that would be. And that's under the grounds that he does some pretty uber crammage work, which is much harder than it looks. I'd say go for a more traditional method on your first portable, use the KISS method.

Though you could make a clamshell with a pivoting screen, so you could keep it folded in a case, but flip the screen out and back down to keep it protected while not in use. Perhaps someday... :P

Oh, and as Brian said, be nice here. No need to insult people, the conversation here is simply an educated debate. It's advised you make friends here, as people who are meanies to the rest of the forum end up having it bite them in the rear at some point or another. A word from the wise.

oh? well i'll bite your ass because i'm crazy also i'm larger than life and you cant change me... anyway you should know that
1. you are leading this thread off topic not me, i just want to talk about the clamshell SNES, i am thinking of doing one of those myself when i get that SNES mini from the mail.
2. i am frequently misunderstood, eventually you will understand that my posts are unnecessarily aggressive, uniformed, and i usually go off half cocked and unplanned. the point is that i am almost never has angry as I sound, my mood can be described as "mildly amused and a little gassy." just check out my alter-ego on modojo those cats can vouch for me.

Is that so? Then I recommend you read this. That being said, as a moderator here, I do feel a need to enforce those rules, and many of the traits you've just described about yourself are in direct conflict with some of the biggies. Being aggressive and uninformed for absolutely no reason aren't things we want here, so you really may want to seriously reconsider your stay.

Thanks. :P And 80x80 is just a general term, so long as it's not huge or extremely distracting, it's fine to go over.

I'm not really dead-set on making it a laptop, I thought the idea seemed cool and I didn't like how the cart slot stuck out extreme amounts in the other portables I saw.

As for your little schematic here, I like it for the most part, except for the cart slot location, I'm sorry, but when it sticks out that car, it makes me wonder... If someone were to slam into it, what would happen. Or if the controller cord was tripped over, is it susceptible to damage.

Thanks again for the help, and wow there was a lot of flaming here....

Well, like I said before, you can make the slot not stick out, but again, you'd have to relocate it. You could, however, reinforce the sides with something; in the portables I showed you before, Kurt_'s SNESp has the cartridge reinforced on the sides with curved plastics, Brian has battery holders on the side to make sure the slot doesn't get jostled around, even Ben's landscape SNESp has things on the side to make sure the cartridge doesn't move around.

Yup, if you have the cartridge sticking out the back it's a necessity to reinforce it. The battery holders on my first one actually did not reinforce the cartridge at all even though that's what it looks like. I got tired of accidentally bumping the cartridge and having the game reset on me. It's not like it happened all the time but that was my main driving force for making my second one. I say go ahead and relocate the cartridge slot, but take your time with it and come up with a game plan ahead of time. Get everything working perfectly and THEN relocate the slot absolutely last. That way, if something isn't working, you know what's up.

snes carts are almost empty with just a small card in there, what if for a handheld you designed it so it only needed the boards themselves, with a door that covers them up to keep the bugs out. that should save a lot of space.

I think you're thinking of NES, SNES carts have their insides pretty much filled up by the game motherboard.
