Aye! I been thinking of getting someone to air brush something on top of the cover when I have it apart.

Probably the UT symbol or something of the like.

The good thing is that this will be a bunch of smallish projects that I can do while at college. I can't build a portable because I don't have "all" my tools.

Ahh I might add a compact flash drive while Im at it.

Aside from that, I completely understand wanting a fun project to be able to work on at school - I miss my soldering iron and all my other tools while I'm away

I know this is a "well, duh" statement, but that screen really is small. I dislike having to scroll sideways on web pages. It's a pet peeve. Since the main reason I'm interested in the EEE is for quick and easy web browsing, that kills my interest

I like getting things that are nice and shiney and new, but the P1120 seems to have far more going for it.

I agree. If Asus made something like the Eee with a 10", 1024x768 normal screen I might consider it, but any screen around 800 pixels wide isn't enough for me. Almost everything's designed for 1024 nowadays, and I'm used to 1280x1024 on a 19" LCD, so going down that far doesn't sound all that great, to be honest.

I'll just look at 10-12" "thin and light" laptops instead.

ive "upgraded" from my lifebook b2610 to a somewhat better condition (and slightly faster) b2630! i really want a u810 or a 2120 but this is good enough for me!

The pictures don't tell the whole story, though. While the screen is a big step up from the EEE's (which is why I'll give a shot at hybriding the two together), the P1120 is much slower. The difference in speed between an 800MHz Transmeta Crusoe and a 900MHz Intel A110 (Celeron M) is staggering. The EEE boots up in 30 seconds to the inbuilt Linux (40 seconds to Windows XP not trimmed down), whereas the P1120 boots to Ubuntu in 3-4 minutes (I forget how long it takes to get to XP, but not fast).

The P1120 has 256MB of RAM (non-upgradable) with 16MB taken up by codemorphing, compared to the EEE with 512MB (upgradable [1GB with default OS, 2GB in others] DDR2 SoDIMM) with 15MB taken up with shared video memory.

I was willing to go hardcore and desolder the RAM in the P1120 and install new chips, but I couldn't find compatible chips in a higher capacity.

You even feel the difference in browsing single sites, threads here take longer to load on the P1120 than the EEE. It just gets worse when you open up multiple tabs, particularly if you listen to Pandora.com at the same time as browsing.

OK i have been messing with the EEE all weekend and heres my thoughts on the machine. I have installed Ubuntu

It boots Ubuntu in under 50 seconds and I have a lot of stuff booting on startup. For reference my Gaming machine will boot Ubuntu in about a minute or so.

Keyboard is small but after a couple hours you get used to. I was typing in no time.

Screen size is not an issue. Sure its 7" but the high DPI of the screen makes up for it and everything is smooth. I can read pdfs for hours on the thing without eye strain. Browsing is nice if you use full screen (F11) Sure on some sites you have to side scroll but its not going to kill you.

Lack of CD-Rom. This is the biggest issue I have.

Price? Where are you going to get a machine with these Specs at this footprint for under $415 (shipping) No where!

Sounds almost as bad as my 300MHz PII Thinkpad. Not too bad for just chatting on Meebo in Firefox, but it starts bringing the lag after you open a couple more tabs. Pandora will play pretty good, as long as its the only page open and you don't do anything else. Youtube plays fairly good, better if the window is minimized or a different tab is being viewed because it doesn't have to play the video. Its better than my PSP, though, theres no side-scrolling, pretty much any site will work on it, and pages load reasonably fast.
