XP Pro lets you map a network drive to a local drive letter, so you might be able to change the installation directory to the network drive. It uses Windows shares ( //[compyname]/[sharename] ), so a new one would have to be created on the server (maybe C:/eeestuff ). It's not exactly the most elegant solution in the world but I don't see any reason for it to not work... :?

Having an extra drive letter doesn't always help, some programs, notably Microsoft components, install to C anyway. Back in the day I installed the latest and greatest IE (like version 5), telling it to install to the D: drive. as my main drive was nearly full. It installed approximately 6 small files on the D: drive, and the rest on C:. Most programs will still install .dlls into the windows system directory, too many programs installed to the D: will fill up your C: if you're short on space.

With file system linking I could've moved IE to the D: and linked it from the spot, and none of the programs would effectively be the wiser. All shortcuts pointing to C:\Program Files\Internet Exploder (or whatever the directory was) would still work, even programs that used the IE .OCX or other components from it would still work without needing to know the new location. If any directory gets too big, you could just copy it to another location and link it, freeing up space on that drive, without affecting any programs.

Then, in newer versions of Linux theres the really neat thing called UnionFS. With that can have a read-only file system or directory, and then merge it with a read/write one. You can even 'overwrite' files. With this, if say a directory of system components is getting full, you could UnionFS it with another directory on a different drive, keep all the components local that are already installed, and all new ones will be on the other drive. This is how you can install stuff when using a Live Linux CD. Unfortunately, I'm not very well versed in it's use, I'm more likely to just use cross-linking (rename old directory, create new directory on another drive, link new directory to old location, open up the renamed folder and use the file manager to link everything in it to the new directory) instead. :?

OK, I'm in. I just bought one from directron with an 8GB Transcend class 6 SDHC card and 2 day Fedex shipping $475.88 after coupon code SUPER200.

Edit:
Directron has a weird verification in effect for orders greater than $400. They just called me, and I needed to send them a picture of my photo ID. Just wanted to make that known.

jandr.com still has them, and appearently don't do anything like that if the above bothers you.

Compare a dog dog to a purse dog. It's like a purse dog.

There's some pics on the site in the first post (or the asus site) that show a chick holding it in her hand, I'm sure that's a better comparison for you.

Riddle me this, F42! Which do you think is better- not just a better deal, but better value for what you can imagine yourself doing with it:

1) Asus Eee PC at market price.

Or

2) Mini-ITX PVR Bundle for $298 (+$20~$30 shipping).

I personally would take the Eee. I would rather be able to access the internet at a decent speed (PSP makes dial up look fast even when using 1.5mbps DSL) than record tv. That Mini-ITX bundle is a nice deal, if only it had an NTSC card. If you just want a movie player without the ability to record, though, I think a modded Xbox with a bigger hard drive would be better.

I get my Black EEE on Friday :D Then time to open her up and do some modding!

I will be running multiple tests (3dmark 2001) to test it out. Going with a slim copy of Ubuntu on the SDD and a copy of Xlite XP on a portable harddrive. I need XP for school work (Engineering programs that don't run under linux/wine). Going to do some Bios updating experiments as well.

I am planning on installing

1. USB hub inside the LCD housing. To do so I am going to splice the USB webcam and hack in the hub.

2. From the hub I will reconnect the webcam and add a USB bluetooth adapter.

3. Add a 7" Touchscreen overlay if there is space behind the LCD screen. Possibly removing the anti-glare from the LCD screen if it affects the touch screen. The USB connection on the touchscreen will tie into the hub.

4. Install 2Gb of ram (already on order). Reason for 2Gb? Because I can.

The webcam, bluetooth adapter, and touchscreen will be connected to a switch that will allow me to turn off a feature if I am not using it. Small slider switches most likely.

if only it had an NTSC card
At first I thought 'surely the card could be switched between PAL and NTSC,' but heck, I'm sure glad I waited!

Thanks vskid, you potentially saved me a whole lot of trouble.

Anything specific you have in mind? I should have mine later today or tomorrow. I'll compare it to my roommate's normal sized laptop and my P1120, but beyond that, not many ideas.

A cd or cd case is always good.
