DVD Drive error on Sony VAIO

A co-worker had me decrapify a Sony VAIO laptop that she bought in April the other day. It's a decent laptop (2.16 C2D, 2GB RAM, Vista Home Premium), but full of crapware. So, I went on an uninstalling spree, uninstalling all the trialware/stuff she didn't use. One thing I uninstalled was some DVD player software. After rebooting, the DVD drive was not recognized as existing. When I went to system information, I got this:

I tried re-installing the DVD software, and it didn't help.

Any ideas for what could be causing the problem? (I don't currently have access to the computer, but I will later at work tonight.)

Well, I know some malware install their own drivers for optical drives and removing it can break the system's ability to even see the drive at all. My suggestion would be to just back up anything your coworker needs to keep and reinstall windows.

That would not be ideal. She has a bunch of junk on there already. If I have to do that though, I guess I will.

It's Bill the demon from an old mac game of the same name. The author ported it to flash, playable here
