Streaming games to the gamecube.

Post by khaag »

I was doing some reading about modding a gamecube to find out what was possible and stuff, and I read somewhere that with a certain modchip you can stream games from your PC to the gamecube through the gamecube broadband adaptor. Is this true? If so, what is needed to do it?

I believe that was using some wacky Phantasy Star Online exploit (not a modchip). I think all you needed to do it were Phantasy Star Online, the GC broadband adapter, and a PC with the special software and ripped GC backups on it.

Looking at this: http://www.viper-chip.com/features.html

It says this chip can do "bidirectional streaming" and it uses USB. I'm not sure if this is what I'm looking for though...

Ultimately, I'm looking to stream ripped GC Isos to the gamecube, without having to have a disk in the system.

I have a Viper Extreme chip in my GC, and the bi-directional streaming thing doesn't work very well for ISOs. I'd recommend getting a BBA, and using a specific streaming DOL like GC-Sim. I've tried several ISOs on that, and it works much better. USB streaming is too slow to play games properly.

Keep in mind that these are 100% legal demo ISOs, which are generally smaller than ILLEGAL RIPPED ISOs. Right?

The Qoob Pro doesn't have bi-directional USB streaming, you only use the USB portion to flash the BIOS.

With the Viper, there is a programme which can stream ISOs, in the 2.1 BIOS. However, like I said, it's too slow, and didn't run very well for me, so I wouldn't recommend it.

I would suggest using the broadband adapter method. You essentially flash a streaming programme to the Viper, and connect the chip via the BBA to your network card. You then have to fiddle with your IP address a bit before you start streaming. You then run the command line programme, select your ISO, and essentially start streaming. It's pretty simple.

Of course, the only downside to this is that you have to have your GC hooked up to your PC the whole time. Why not buy some cheap DVD-Rs and make a multiboot disk with all your 100% legal demo ISOs? It would be less hassle.

Is there a method for booting of an SD card without involving the disk drive? As you may have guessed, I'd like to eliminate the drive to save power and size.

I read a while ago that you could use Qoob and GCOS, but I couldn't get any good details on it.

Could you do the BBA thing and then hook up a wireless ethernet bridge? It seems it would solve the problem of having to be hooked up to the pc...
