Terrible analogy. You see, unlike sitcoms are for TV, 3D platformers are the core foundation of just about every 3D real-time game on the market. 3D action games, beat-em-ups, hell, even many recent FPS games all draw influence from platformers of the same dimension. Just look at Super Mario 64. It's an entire package, and nearly every game nowadays draws from that formula. Sure, it's been tweaked numerous times over the years, but the core gameplay hasn't changed much at all. My point is, even if you don't particularly enjoy some 3D platformers, realize that virtually any recent game you play uses some elements from this genre; not to mention giving such great innovation credit where it's due.benol wrote:That's like saying "Why do you even watch TV?" to someone who doesn't like sitcoms.CronoTriggerfan wrote:In all honesty, why do you even play games then?benol wrote:To answer all of the "ZOMG Y U H8 MARIO!?!?!" You know, for someone with such a mastery of the English language, you sure didn't pick your words too wisely there.

Allow me to be more specific. I hate 3D platformers like SM64, Tomb Raider, 3D Sonic games, ect. (Even though Sonic Adventure was pretty baddass). I am fine with FPS's, action games ect. Also, your username is CronoTriggerfan. You should understand there is more to gtaming than 3D! CronoTrigger isn't 3D, is it? If it wasn't for the 3D boom back in the late 90's, we wouldn't even have so many crappy 3D games.CronoTriggerfan wrote:Terrible analogy. Well, to get back on the topic of Mario, IGN gave this game a 9.7! You can read the review here.

I'm not saying that 3D games are "better" or "worse" than 2D games, in fact I tend to fancy 2D games, as you may or may not already know. I'm simply stating that even if you don't like a genre, instead of saying you hate it, realize that it has revolutionized the way games are played in this day and age, that's all.benol wrote:Allow me to be more specific. The verdict is in! A 9.7 from IGN, pretty impressive if you ask me.
Oh, and for everyone in NYC, this looks like a tremendously good time!
That doesn't make any sense. Those games you listed as not liking are some of the best of that genre (SM64 is the best game ever). As with every boom, you always get some crappy stuff. Like during the industrial revolution, not every invention made was a super good change-humanity-forever kind of invention, some just plain sucked. Look at now, with the Wii/DS revolution, all those "brain training" games, some of them are decen... nevermind, they all suck (just my little rant about Nintendo's current strategy).benol wrote:If it wasn't for the 3D boom back in the late 90's, we wouldn't even have so many crappy 3D games.
Just because you dislike a genre doesn't mean all the games of that genre are crap.

I never said that. It means most of them are though. My main problems with 3rd person 3D platformers are that the controls are either too accurate (Sonic) or they're too slow and chunky (Tomb Raider), They are unimaginative (Run around in a 3D world and collect stuff. What fun.), and nobody ever got the camera controls right (You know it's true. Don't deny it!).vskid wrote:Just because you dislike a genre doesn't mean all the games of that genre are crap.

I would have to go along with Benol on this in not caring for SM64 in particular. For whatever reason I never got into that game. The 2D Mario games were a damn good time. 3D? Not so much IMO. I guess it is the same as the 3D Zelda thing for me. I just can't get into it.
In addition, to say that someone shouldn't even bother with games because they don't appreciate an older game that today's games may have drawn upon for some gameplay elements is a touch on the naive side I would say. This would be the equivalent of saying that if you don't like Citizen Kane, then you shouldn't watch movies anymore. It just doesn't make sense.
FYI - Gamespot gave it a 9.5.

I probably won't buy it. I'm getting rather sick of Mario 64 and the likes. The only Gamecube game I own that I haven't beat (Except for the star wars ones) is Mario Sunshine. I just need something a little more NEW. Sure, old things are great, but there's a limit. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's just a bit too repetitive for me.
Hey, sup?
