Mission OQO!

I want a OQO Model 2.
I just need help deciding if I should really get it or not.

Just a few questions:

1)Is the basic version of the model 2 (The $1299 one), better then OQO Model 1?

2)What kind of graphic card does the OQO model 2 have? It doesnt say on their website.

3)Could I possibly run a low graphic 3D game on it? Like Halflife? (Regular halflife will run on my p2, 16 mb videocard pc). Or maybe Duke Nukem? (The old ones, as they are the best.) or Doom or something. Or maybe a emulator (NES, SNES, MasterSystem, N64)

4)Do they run fast?

5) Are they really worth it? Worth it to spend $1300 or more (I want extended battery)

I have a good paying job. $10/h on weekends. So I can make enough money in 8 weekends of working.

3) Via's integrated GPU's are pretty pathetic. You might get UT or HL running...maybe

Spend the money on something else. Do you really need a Windows PC in your pocket? You can get tiny sub-notebooks off eBay for a fraction of the price. You won't be putting one in your pocket, but you'd end up with an actually usefull PC. I think you're just falling for the "its shiney-I want it" syndrom.

3. Possibly, if it has any sort of 3D acceleration. The screen resolution is low enough that some things might run on their lowest settings. I wouldn't count on Half Life running, but really old stuff like Duke Nukem should run. Doom will definitely run. (If iPods and my PDA can run Doom, the OQO can. ) Emulators? Pretty much everything 2D besides MAME should run full-speed. (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.) You might be able to get PSX emulation going, since my old P2 400 laptop with an S3 GPU could run it without problems (Look up Virtual Game Station and epsxe). I wouldn't count on N64 emulation working at a playable speed.

4. For the size? They're okay. For the price? Not by a long shot. VIA processors are made to sip power, not run fast.

5. I don't think so. You're better off getting a subnotebook like a Lifebook than one of these things. You'll get comparable speeds, more expandability, and better hardware for half the price if you buy refurbished/used/cheap hardware.

The OQO is a lot like Nano-ITX motherboards. They're fun and tiny, but grossly underpowered for the price.

If you do get a laptop, don't get a "desktop replacement" model. They're cheaper, but they're also huge and guzzle battery power. I know from experience.

I think you'd be better off with something like a Fujitsu Lifebook U810. It costs less for similar performance, with a bigger, higher resolution touchscreen. Plus it has a full-ish size keyboard. And I don't know about you, but I wouldn't put an OQO with its unprotected screen in my pocket, laptop style means that the screen can be protected when not in use.

ive seen videos of the 02 running hl and so forth, i may get an 01 from ctfan but if i could get a u810 for the same price i would be on it in a heartbeat, they sell for 800+ on ebay usually and my budget is around 400+trades give or take

The Fujitsu Lifebook, is $1000, and is worse sorta.

For $1000 cheaper, you get a 800 mhz processer, but you get a 1gb ram.

Compare to $1300, The OQO you get a: 1.2 ghz processor, but 512mb ram.

(Paypal says, I reached some $5000 limit, and cant buy online without regiustering a creditcard. Funny thing is, My records say I only spent $800 online.)

Lifebook also has a bigger, higher resolution touchscreen, a full keyboard, and its a convertible tablet pc. It also depends on what you'll be using it for, if you're that worried about speed, maybe you should just get a normal laptop with like a 12" screen.

I think CTFan's is a model 1.
How do you expect to get one not online? I doubt many stores carry these.

$1300?! US dollars?

That kind of money will buy you a MacBook with a 13" screen, DVD+-RW DL Superdrive, 1 gig of RAM, 180 gig HD, and a 2.2 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

NOTE: If you're talking in Canadian dollars, throw in an extra gig of RAM. : P

A normal laptop is going to be a much better buy. Get a 12 or 13" laptop; you won't regret it. if you want a pocket size internet machine, get a PDA or a Nokia 770.

I have cash for college. Don't worry.

I want to see if CTF could sell me his. I could make $400 in about 1 pay check. (I get paid every other week. So, I made $160 a week,x2 = 320. Converted to USD = $345)

So, I'd have $345 in just 2 weeks of working. (Give or take, depending on taxes and such.)

If that interests you, you might want to check out Kohjinsha's laptops. They're very similar to the U810, just gives you a few options if the U810 isn't exactly what you need.
Yes, I've become somewhat of an expert on small laptops since the Eee PC came out.

CTfan has an OQO model 1, 1ghz 20gb hdd 256mb ram and he cant sell it for less than 600$, i am currently discussing the possibilty of buying it from him but i would MUCH MUCH MUCH rather get a u810 or similar other laptop

if you want hand held gameing, make a ops2 portable or possibly just buy a psp, they are totally worth it for the emulators alone (I don't think I've even played a UMD Game more than once on mine )

My friend's father works at Fujitsu, so he gets tons of free lifebooks. Guess where some of those end up! I can tell you, lifebook are either hit or miss. This one he has (forget the name exactly) has a nice tiny size (1280x768 screen), and 1GB of RAM, but then a pathetic 800mhz CRUSOE (ugh) processor makes it painful to use. Others, on the other hand, are sometimes delightful to use.

I'm not sure about the other questions, but whoever said the original Half-Life would not run on it is crazy (er, no offense). Looking at the specs, it can definitely handle HL1. Maybe no one realizes anymore it, but HL1 can run in software mode. It was one of the last FPSes to support computers without hardware acceleration. I'm not sure what kind of hardware acceleration it has (shared memory? meh), but even if it had none it would run HL1.

I decided to hit up google to prove my point. Check this out. Though I'm not sure which Model 02 it is.
