Both of them look really Apple-esque. Since the Eee's proc supports SSE2, you could probably install 10.5 with the SSE2 kernel, but I think 10.4.6 would be more viable. An Eee running Mac, that would be quite an interesting site.

i plan on buying another lifebook or similar laptop and selling my current one, i love mine to death but i want something same sized or smaller with more power! this one is starting to wear a bit and i just want something newer! i was thinkin a lifebook P2120 or something, 933mhz transmeta processor and a gig of ram, or possibly a toshiba portege or T series lifebook too, OR if i can somehow find one for ridiculously cheap a sharp actius MM20, i thought about the eepc but the low res lcd and price (400-500 on ebay) kinda turned me off, i am lookin to spend sub 300 on a laptop right now, money from the sale of mine plus a bit

my ONE criterion is it MUST have a trackpoint type mouse i loathe touchpads! unless its an ungodly good deal

This is pretty hilarious. Whatever happened to the $199 price? If I get any of these, it will be the Eee PC 2G Surf, which should retail around 250...hopefully.

I was expecting these to go up higher in price than the initial $199 price tag they were toting, but not quite this much. Still, in the US, you can't get a laptop this size with this much power for less than a $1000 last I checked, except for the EEE.

I have heard rumors that the lower end models, specifically the ones with less battery, are not coming to the US. That would make some sense, as the lower cheaper would be best for going against the OLPC in developing markets, whereas the EEE 4G has a nice niche here in the US even with it's higher price.

I'm not really a fan of touchpads either, the smaller one on the EEE would be a wrist killing annoyance. The trackpoint on my P1120 works just great despite the small size of the notebook, other than licensing issues (I think the Trackpoint is patented by IBM) I don't understand why Asus didn't go with one here. Still, if they dropped the price or upped the screen res, I'd have little problem with taking along one of those wireless pocket mice. One of the videos I saw reviewing the EEE had a wireless mouse with a dongle that was barely bigger than the USB port.

I saw that one also, it looked like a logitech mouse.

I am thinking about one of these when I get my next few paychecks, it looks like it would be nice to have in addition to a desktop and I think I may want to try ubuntu on it

Why the 2GB model? The stock OS is a little more than 3 GB, so you would have almost no space for anything on the 2GB model!

I was thinking about the 4G model, because it has a decent amount of ram (512mb). I made up a design of a hard drive and dvd drive that would attach to the bottom of the laptop, and run a single usb cord up to the left side.

Would you be able to get enough power and current out of a single USB port to power both the hard drive and disc drive? Obviously laptop drives have lower requirements, but you might want to research to make sure it's enough.

Because it is cheap, and it suits my needs. Then again, I doubt I'll be buying any of these, period.

It isn't out yet but I think they will have to strip more stuff out.

considering you can get a fully functional install of windows ME down to under 300mb without using anything like 98lite i dont see why they would have a problem, hell DSL is only 50mb

windows 2000 is a good choice and it would be on my lifebook if i had it at the time i was setting it up, i had ME so ME got installed, works just fine!
