Help me with my spiffy new laptop

Post by daguuy »

First here's some background info on why I'm upgrading. Here's the specs of my current PC:

1.6 ghz AMD sempron, 32 bit single core
640 mb ram
45gb HDD
Windows XP pro

It's slow as hell and takes forever to do anything, especially when I'm multitasking (a lot). I need a computer that has a decently fast processor and is good at multitasking and using ram-heavy stuff. I also need it to be a laptop because I'm going to college (Rolla) next year and also want to get rid of my desk and use a nice big comfy balloon chair instead :P .
I've narrowed it down to 2 choices:
1.6gh C2D with 2gb ram and vista buisness
2ghz AMD Turion64 X2 with 2gb ram and XP pro
<s>2.2ghz AMD Turion64 MK-38 with 1gb ram and Vista Home Premium</s>
Which one should I get?
I don't know much about AMD Turions so how would a 2ghz Turion compare with a 1.6ghz C2D? What about Vista vs XP?

I think you should get the 2ghz AMD Turion64 X2 with 2gb ram and XP pro. It the one that seem to have to most bang for your buck to me. Besides lots of current game and apps have major compatabilty issues with Vista. And it has the most ram. And a powerful processor. I don't know much about the AMD Turion64 line either. But if that processor is 2/3's as good as my AMD Athlon 64 processor. That should be a great laptop.

Who knows if the Namco Portable will ever become a reality? :P

I agree with Nightwheel. The Fujitsu is too heavy, and you'll kill yourself if you get something with a really small screen.

The Toshiba seems to have everything in order; weight is below 6 lbs, exhaust port is on left side, X1200 graphics...

That being said, I hope you aren't a PC gamer.

Thanks guys. I didn't notice the small screen on the 3rd one, otherwise it would have been out of the question. I'm more of a console gamer so I don't really need the most graphically powerful lappy.

Looking at the Fujitsu page, I see you can get it with XP Pro instead of Vista. That would be my choice. The Core2Duo's perform much better than AMD's current dual-core offerings, and from what I've heard use less power too. That's my thought.
