Strange Network Problem

I have a Linuxbox (Ubuntu Fiesty) set up with a Samba share on my network that I use to play stuff on my Xbox (via XBMC). Everything was fine with that, until I reinstalled XP on a different computer. I then discovered that I cannot access the Samba share unless my old XP install (which I thankfully left on the HDD anyway) is running. (I had never noticed the issue before, as I don't usually turn this computer off.) I also cannot see the shared folder from the new XP. How can I remedy this problem, so that I can use my new, not-got-awful-slow install of XP and still use the shared folder on my Linuxbox?

Is it on the right workgroup? I had to change the workgroup on my dad's laptop to the same one as our desktop so it could share a hard drive.

All my computers are set to "MSHOME" as their workgroup. XBMC gives me the option of selecting which workgroup to access, but unless that particular XP is running it'll say "no workgroup found" or something similar.

did you run the network setup wizard and/or enable file sharing? its not enabled by default for obvious reasons

I did both, and it's still not working.

Possible cause: I did disable a bunch of services (from this guide). Could disabling one of them have created this issue?
