Wii Virtual Console Games (are they worth it)

Post by nightwheel »

As you guys I know. I have a Nintendo Wii. But a few days ago I downloaded a game off the Wii Shop Channel, Virtual Console section. The game I got was Super Mario Bros which I already the cartridge. But the NES I had stopped working and was sent to the dump 9 years ago. I mean it's nice and all to be able to download the game for playing on the Wii. But you basicly are paying for game you already own. For people that already owns the games. Wouldn't been smart on Nintendo behalf to make some sort of adapter that Pluged into the Wii's USB Ports. That has some sort of switchable cartridge slots?

Now on the other hand. Say there was a game that you have been wanting for so long and you don't have it. And they happend to have it avaible on the Virtual Console. And you get it and enjoy it. For less than it would cost to get it off ebay.

I don't know about you guys but some of this make no sense to me. Your guys opinion on this?

The point of virtual console is to bring old games to people who've never played them before or do not own them. Of course, if you already own the game there is no real point in getting it via VC unless you don't have the console...or want to sell the console.

Making the consumer want to buy something they already bought is marketing genius, and Nintendo's cashing in on it in a big way. I think they've sold Super Mario Bros at least 5 times already:

- NES (original run)
- SNES (Super Mario All-Stars; SMAS+SMW)
- Game Boy Color (Super Mario Bros. Deluxe)
- Game Boy Advance (Classic NES series)
- Virtual Console (Duh)

And of course don't forget the Super Mario Advance games, Super Mario 64 DS, the DS Lite, GBA SP, Game Boy Micro, Game Boy Pocket, the entire Classic NES game series... If there's one thing Nintendo really "gets", it's selling you your stuff again and again.

I'm not saying that selling a 22 year old game for $5 isn't a ripoff (because it is), but the Virtual Console is an accountant's dream: almost 100% profit with very little expense.

I don't think it's worth it if you already have a copy around, but what you do with your money is your business. Me? I've got a NES. :P And a HTPC loaded with games that cost less than a Wii...

The Virtual Console will be worth it when Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Mario RPG make an appearance.
Meh, I don't post much.

Earthbound! YEAH!!!

No really, I think jedi knight has a point - those are games that are hard to find/rare. If you want to play them (legally) it can cost a pretty penny. Nintendo would be wise to sell them on VC. (Plus, Mother 1 and Mother 3 would be appreciated too!)

if you have a Wii laptop than you actually have 8 portables in one: a Wii, Gamecube, N64, Sega mega drive, Turbografx 16, Neo Geo, SNES and NES.
I already downloaded about ten games and I really can't wait for Supermario RPG to come out since it hasn't released in Europe and I live in holland.

You think Nintendo marketed the Wii towards nerds only? I bet 12% of the people who own a Wii own an NES. You don't have to buy the games if you don't want to.
Valve is the best company.

Exactly, I doubt grandma and her 7 year old grandson have even heard of a NES.
