Ok. Theres a new buzz going on about the iPod Touch Jailbreak hack. It allows you to add most of the applications from an iPhone on the touch. Well I have been thinking. Why would you ever need any of the iPhone applications. Ill explain why you dont need a single one of them. Ill give you one answer and one answer only. IGOOGLE!!!! Its been out for a bit now, and it can do any of the iPhone apps. Mail? Gmail. Weather? Its got weather. Calender? Its got a calender with add buttons. Notes? Its got that too people. So why waste your time with all of the stuff you have to do to jailbreak with it, when you can set iGoogle as your homepage. Just a thought. Discuss!

I'm pretty sure the jailbreak also allows iPhone Homebrew and emulators to run on the Touch too.

That means that you have a MAME and NES Emulator on the Touch too.

Though, for $300/$600, I'll stick to a PSP or something cheaper...

I don't see what's wrong with emulating nintendo on nintendo platforms anyway. I mean the GBA can do it, and the DS can do it as well.

I still think Apple is squandering the iPhone / iPod Touch capabilities by releasing them as glorified cell phones / MP3 players. They would have been better off releasing them as PDAs and offering a free or inexpensive official SDK. (Sort of like what you can do with Windows Mobile, the .NET Compact Framework, and Visual Studio 2005.) They both have WiFi, a good amount of onboard storage, and a multi-touch screen. (Most Palms and Pocket PCs have WiFi, but I haven't seen any with as much storage, and I've never seen one with a multi touch screen.) They can do a lot more than Apple lets you, given a chance.

The iNewton.

It won't be long before someone makes a Skype client for them, if it hasn't come out already. (The Touch would need a microphone add-on, though.)

I remember the days when phones just made calls, and MP3 players just played music

Its really hard to find a standard (morderatly large) MP3 player these days, i dont want pictures, i dont want video, hell i dont even care about colour

But nooo i have to pay out for all these things i dont want, i miss my Zen touch... so simple

im currently using that and i dont like it

Mainly because it wont fit in my pocket and it skips

otherwise i would have never bothered with MP3 players

In that case, big pockets FTW! I've never had any trouble fitting my CD player in my jacket's or jeans' pockets... I guess I'm just lucky that way.

What if you don't have an internet connection because you're on the go? Also, AJAX is cool and all, but a built in app is much better anyway. I'm getting a Touch as soon as there's Linux support again.

Well first off, iPhone != Mac.

It can:
- Browse the web (the real web, not the cell phone web.)
- Play videos (locally or streamed off YouTube)
- Play music (but then again what can't nowadays?)
- Call people (really?!)
- View full screen maps
- Buy music and video off the iTunes store anywhere there's a wi-fi hot spot, no computer required

It's also got a multi-touch screen (imagine a picture of a NES controller in a NES emulator acting just like the real thing), has 8 gigs of storage (crazy storage for a smartphone /pda), and is now only $400. The only downside is that cell plans for it start at $60/month thanks to all the data transfer.

The iPod Touch does everything the iPhone does (but no calls or service plan) for $300 ($400 for 16 gigs).

They're both pretty expensive when you compare them to other MP3 players and cell phones, but they're competitive against high-end Pocket PCs. (Not those $99 Palm units with no wireless and 5 MB of storage space.)
