There is a senior in my school that believes there are only 12 hours in the day, because that is why they make clocks with only 12 hours on them.

So 20 awake and 8 asleep? That works out to a few extra hours per day after factoring in the fact that your "week" is really only 6 days. (It seems like the 28 hour day takes Sunday and spreads it over the rest of the week.) I use the 18/6 and 17/7 schedules myself, which trade off 12-14 14 hours of sleep for awake time per week. It's OK though, I've never slept much. Yay insomnia! [/sarcasm] Hey at least you get 8 hours every night. :P

It must be hard to find a watch that goes to 14:00 AM and PM. (Not military time.)

But back on topic, there was a guy in my Server 2003 class today who hot-swapped a cold swap drive bay (pulled it out while it was running when you're supposed to shut down the computer first) and fried his hard drive. (We were all laughing because he just rebuilt it with Server 2003 and Fedora 7 the other day and did all the labs in both classes to catch up with everyone else again.)

EDIT: @benol: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/28-hour_day

EDIT 2: My math failed. :(

We could slow down the earth's rotation so that we have 28 hour days, so that you wouldn't end up sleeping all day or something. Or if thats too hard for to do, you could just do more during the day, so that you're drained of energy at the end of the day.

this is kind of ridic but today my bro got a referall. let me tell you, hes in 7th grade but he's already a hippy. you'd have to know him.

so today he comes into school with a headband on. the teacher tells him to take it off, he refuses and says "make me".

referalls are a bad thing in my school, there like write-ups.

In one of my Calc III discussion sessions, we were going over some applied math problems, and one of them involved a circuit changing over time due to other varying inputs, one of them being resistance. One of the students tried to make a point about how impractical these problems were, because: "These situations never come up in real life. I mean, who's ever heard of a varying resistor?"

Surprisingly, no one else gave him an odd look when he said this, but I was the only EE in the room, so I let it slide.

not related to the classroom, but i had a roommate once that gave me a strange look when i said the word "apathetic" then she proceeded to ask me what it meant, and told me that i needed to stop using such big words. she was a junior in college. i was a freshman. >.<

Well said. :)
Thats why americans are ignorent of what goes on around them. War in iraq?
Sucess in my books [/sarchasm]
Oh my god. Bagels just did a great job of making the few remaining intelligent Americans look stupid. Sure, you can have pride in your own country, but the ones who give a crap about getting a real job and whatnot should know that it's good to learn about the entire world, as you might have to be interacting with parts of it. By saying that, you look like an ignorant, stupid lazy conservative 10 year old with blinds on the sides of your head.

ATTENTION ARROGANTS: We may have a right to be proud of the country, but not be total poop egress and snobs to other countries. There is rarely an acceptable reason to do that, other than being an ass. By saying things like "WIR THE BEST U GISE" you're just wading yourself deeper and deeper into your own crap.

The War in Iraq is the manifestation of stupidity, I agree with you there Felino. Don't worry, not all of us say/think such stupid things.

I think you totally missed the point of Bagels' post. He never said that Americans don't or shouldn't learn about other countries. He simply said that U.S. citizens tend to have pride in their country.

He then responded to what Felino said about his teacher teaching telling him that Americans are stuck-up jerks by saying that American teachers don't whine about other countries like that.

So you're complaining about Bagels by complaining about something he didn't say. How's that for "looking stupid?"

And what the heck is up with writing "ignorant, stupid, lazy conservative?" That's just stupid, offensive, and ill-informed. And liberal! (Just kidding on that last one)

Who is being a snob? I mean, it's not like Bagels' classified an entire group of people with a similar belief system as "ignorant, stupid, and lazy."

Back on topic:

I remember back when I was in high school and took driver's education. I think that class is offered largely to give coaches something to do during the day. The instructor spent quite a while discussing "periphial" vision.

Later, he mentioned that men are involved in 80% of automobile accidents. Everyone was gasping at that number. Guys must be terrible drivers!

I then pointed out that if the number of men and women drivers is assumed to be equal, and everyone is equally likely to cause an accident, men would still be involved in 75% of all accidents. There are only four possibilities-- man hits woman, man hits man, woman hits man, and woman hits woman. Men are involved in three of those scenarios regardless. That's very basic probability, but nobody in the entire class (including the coach) believed me.

Well, I took it as meaning that he was saying that teachers have a right not to want to each about other countries. Bagels, if that's not what you meant, then I apologize. If it was, however, I strongly stand by my statement. Or most of it.

Anyone here who makes another comment involving politics, wars, nationalism, etc. will get this thread locked, and possibly some more. It's gone on long enough. You all have the right to be proud of where you're from, but let's keep the country-bashing to a minimum. You've been warned.

We were discussing Nationalism and the political climate in the South during post-Civil War Reconstruction in my eleventh grade history class when the teacher stopped class towards the end so that we could all watch the shuttle launch back when they took John Glenn along in 1999 (or maybe it was 1998).

My teacher said that it was a great historic occasion and that John Glenn was the ideal candidate for studying the effects of space travel on aging.

This was stupid because Story Musgrave is almost as old as John Glenn and has over 53 days in space, compared to John Glenn's piddly single trip around the earth. He would have been a much better selection.
