help. now.

Post by ganonbanned »

I just got a make-shift computer set up in my room. it was running really slow, so I kept putting more ram in it. finally I found 2 sticks that were 64 mb, and 1 that was 128. I put it in and started it up. now theres something wrong with the screen. when I first turned it on, there was a message with something about "out of range" and something about hertz. now the screen wont turn on, even though its plugged in, and plugged into the computer, it just shows a yellow light. I tried shaking the mouse too, nothing still happens. any suggestions?

The computer's scan rate or resolution is too high for the screen to handle. Try rebooting into safe mode and resetting the screen res to something safe like 800x600.

What kind of hardware are you using?

256Mb total RAM?

I have an old P1 computer which I use as a permanently playing MP3 player (using the one USB port for an external hard disk with all the MP3's on it), which is 433Mhz and has 384Mb RAM on Windows XP; only running one application; works fine but only for this one task!

Lol, I have an old 299Mhz comp with 64MB RAM...it's actually not bad, boot time is good. It's my backup computer, only really good for internet, haven't thought about using it as a MP3 players as you described, but I have thought about turning it into a music server for our network. 8) I'm lazy, so I'll get that done in a few years.

Two possibilities as I see it;

First possibility is that the sticks are not compatible with the motherboard, are in the board in the wrong order, are dead, or are conflicting with each other (more common as you go back PC ages) and the monitor is displaying out of range due to receiving no signal, or your PC has crashed hard enough to disrupt the sync signals from your card.

Solution:
Make sure biggest RAM is in the lowest numbered slot (0 or 1) and try it with only that stick in at first. Keep adding sticks until it no longer boots, or you have all your ram installed.

Second possibility is that you have onboard video, and the video chip noticed that it has more ram and goes to a higher resolution that is beyond what your monitor can handle.

Solution:
Reboot into Safe Mode as bicostp suggested and change the resolution. Failing that, try going into the BIOS and reducing the amount of ram dedicated to video.
