Playtest my FPS game!

Post by TheOnlyOneHeFears »

I hope this isn't breaking any rules, I've seen this done before, so I don't think it's blogging.

Pre-Beta 1

Download and revel in my FPS Creator glory! :P Seriously, I'd appreciate playtesters, it's the first game I've made with FPS Creator, and I'd like people to see what they like and what they don't like etc. It's a one level demo (sort of a proof of concept to myself) of a WWII themed shooter called 'The Few'. It's around 45MB, so it may take a while. Bear in mind that I set the textures and lighting settings to their lowest, so that it would be playable on most graphics cards. The finished game will look a lot better.

Standard FPS controls, WASD to move, left click shoot, right click zoom, scroll wheel change weapons, hold shift to sprint, C to crouch, Q and E to peek.

I've also set up a website here which will document the development process.

I'll get right on that (even tho I'm not an FPS guy, for me FPS stands for "frames per second")

edit: doesn't work for me...

If you're gonna be successful with a FPS Creator game, you're gonna have to make your own models/textures/HUD. Using all the default stuff isn't hard to do. If you look on the FPSC forums, you'll see tons of games using all the same models, presets, and entities and they are all virtually the same game in a different layout. Don't be lazy! Take some time, make your own models, or at least re-skin the models to make it more original. It'll be more of an accomplishment.

I'm in! But right now, I'm indisposed; I'll download and play that sucker the second I get home. Do you want feedback here in the thread so other people can comment on it, or via PM/email, or somewhere on that site you linked?

And Khaag, even though the games made using FPS Creator look identical, I think that the beauty of a good FPS is in its map design, not in slick textures and unique art design (although they definitely don't hurt!).

@Ecksem Diem

You can comment wherever, I don't mind. I'll be checking here and on my site, so I'll get the comments wherever :)

@khagg

I was planning on making my own models/textures etc, but this first demo is just to get a feel for FPS Creator and how it works. I'm going to try to make this good, so I will be spending time designing my own stuff, I just need to learn how FPS Creator works first.

I had an idea for a rather ambitious (though simple to make) project that I think could be done in FPS Creator, but it would require a lot of reference photography, and you really can't hang around taking pictures of things in any particular area of New York County anymore, lest the cops should harrass you for being a terrorist or some crap (because there aren't enough pre-Nine Eleven photos of New York landmarks to use for plotting and scheming, right?). However, another project I had in mind that I think could be done in FPS Creator would basically be a map of the mall near where I live, and I think reference photography for it could be done there with relative ease. Basically, there's the original mall, which seems almost as though it was designed as a pantopticon with escalators (and certainly gives off the appropriate prison-style feel), and at some point over the years, they connected it to a department store on the same block, and a few years ago, they built a fairly typical mall across the street and connected it to that via this weird semi-rotunda that looks like one of those tunnels in an FPS, where you can't see more than fifteen feet ahead of you because of the curvature of it, leaving it open for surprise enemies and what have you.

Alright that's good. I was thinking that you were gonna make a full game out of this. But if it's a learning experience, than that's a different story. This will be a good way to learn the ways of FPSC.

After shooting 4 or 5 guys (one or two after you get the rifle) I got stuck and couldn't move out of a box several steps long. I felt like a mime.

It looks like it has potential, and I might give the program a try too. Is the coding too hard to learn? The whole 3D thing probably has way to many glitches to get out to be worth it though.

The loading time was brutal, especially for so few items and graphics. It was worse than a half-life 2 loading time by a factor of a quarter, roughly.

Hmm , looks rather professional (judging by the pictures) .

Is this program hard to use? I mean , did you have any previous programming knowledge before you made it?

Also, pre-beta = alpha. But what you have going is looking a lot like wolfenstein for windows.

Could you have picked a slower Host? Jeez...32 kb/sec aint exactly good.

I'll test it then and I'll post what I think. I love FPS's and don't be mad if I dont like it cause I'm so used to the killer FPS games like UT, CS, and HL2.

Wow, that's strange, I tested the exe on 2 computers and didn't have that problem. Sorry :oops:. The loading times are the fault of the programme, not me, it's very slow. Some guy's full game took about 15 minutes to load. Apparently the DirectX10 version will be faster, although it would be hard to get any slower :P

@nc

I know a total of zero programming languages :P It's pretty easy to pick up and use, there are about 35 video tutorials on the website, which I'd definitely recommend watching, they really help. You don't necessarily have to know how to programme, although you can make custom scripts which require programming knowledge.

@Harshboy

Sorry, I was in a rush to upload it, and the host was the only one I could find which would allow a free 45mb upload. Based on what you've said, you probably won't like it much :P But I appreciate people trying it out.

Try rs.com, or rs.de, or gigasize if you want er. Giga size?

Also, use .co.nr .tk really stinks man. It has ads, .co.nr doesn't.

What about gamma? :P

I'm getting an error report each time I try to run the game. Any suggestions?
