Why is Gordon Freeman put on a pedestal by everyone else?

Please, no Half-life 2 plot speak, I'm on the third chapter. I have, however, beat HL1 and all expansions.

Gordon Freeman caused the whole catastrophe of the world being destroyed in the first place. All he did was escape Black Mesa, and kill the head honcho of the Alien World (And nobody knows about that). And even then, the enemies made his death their #1 priority. Why?

So why is he so important to the characters? They treat him like he is God, and not one person blames him for the whole mess in the first place?

Can anyone explain this? Am I missing something obvious?

first, all we know about the whole thing is what we can gather from the plots of hl1 and 2 and ep 1. gordon sorta did cause the events of hl1 to occur but it was because he was doing his job, nobody knows the motives of the higer ups in that, like the Gman for example. he is their number 1 enemy because he is the only one who poses a real threat to them. at this point we dont know enough of the combines motives (other than ruling/destrying earth) or the Gmans motives or even wtf he is. im psyched to get orangebox

So basically, half-life is a best-selling series with no distinguishable plot thus-far?

I too will probably get the Orange Box. It's such a good game I just might BUY it!

it has a plot its just that much of it has yet to be revealed to the player, you know everything that has happened to gordon himself but other things are beyond the scope of his knowledge and are gradually being revealed. also just bought orangebox today

Actually Gordon didn't cause the resonance cascade at all. According to my understanding (having played every scrap of the entirety of half-life series thus far) the RC was caused by the Lambda team. They were the ones messing with Xen you know. I think that the analysis of the anomalous materials was simply the trigger of the RC. Gordon was simply moving the materials into place, he did nothing wrong. If you listen to the employees of black mesa before the experiment, they explain that there were all kinds of problems with their equipment that whole day. I think that the Gman had something to do with that, but who knows?

A story that told you all the answers in the beginning and held your hand through the rest wouldn't be particularly interesting, would it? Unfortunately for your post, virtually everyone in the world who matters has agreed that the story is incredible.

What plot? Other than glimpses of higher powers from the likes of Gman and the head of the Cities (who reminds me ever so much of both the villain from "Speed" (Keanu Reeves) and "Land of the Dead".

I agree that some plot has to be concealed in order to capture interest. But half-life is hiding so much of the plot, it makes me wonder what makes me continue to ply it other than the gameplay.
