can I burn DVD's in an AVI format? I have every angry nintendo/video game nerd video on my computer (it's legal, he doesnt sell them), and I wanted to burn them to a dvd. I dont have a DVD burner, im borrowing my friends, and I dont want to waste a disk. all of the videos are in AVI format, and I dont want to convert them.

I'm pretty sure DVD's are in Mpeg-2 format, so no, you would have to convert them first.

Unless you just want to watch them on another computer.

would you happen to know of a free, mass converter? and is Divx good on a dvd player?

You need a program like Nero. Ask your friend if he's got the install CD.

You can't just dump video files on a DVD and expect it to work, unless you've got a Divx-DVD player.

I use toast for all my dvd/vcd needs.

Vcd may be old, but i like it.

By the way, look up his DVD player model online- it may be possible, although unlikely, that his DVD player can accept AVI. A few rare do, although you may have to look and see what codec is necessary all the same, which may mean converting/encoding them anyhow.

I do it with nero. It takes AGES to convert a (completely legally acquired) single movie

I actually see a lot of DivX DVD players around these days, they are catching on in the same way MP3 CD players did.

I happen to have one myself, its pretty sweet. I think it works with XviD too.

Anyways, Nero dosent come with MP2 encoding software, you have to buy it extra. In general, you are going to have to pay (or "pay") for an MP2 encoder (another parallel to MP3).

There is a free program out there called TmpgEnc or something, but its very user unfriendly, and all it does is the encoding - you have to do all the support files yourself with other software

kvcd is such an ugly and inefficient format, a damn shame that it is so popular because even junky old avi has much better quality for the same amount of storage space. though you cant play them in a normal dvd player, avi's that is. also i never got kvcd's to work in my dvd player either the sound is always messed up i end of having to convert the damn things anyway.

its a shame that he basic dvd player is not upgradable for all the crazy new codecs that show up so much.
