Will insulating my connections with Hot-Glue botch them?

Will insulating my connections with Hot-Glue botch them?

Post by Seaniccus »

Hey - I'm working on an NESp project, and I've got the idea in my head that I can secure my soldered connections and protect them from shorts by covering them in Hot-Glue.

Is that as awful an idea as it sounds? Will covering a live connection in hot glue interfere with the data/energy transfer? Is it dangerous for any reason? Will it ruin my project?

Theres nothing wrong at all with covering them in hotglue, its an insulator, so it doesn't affect the connections at all. Only problem is that changing or fixing a connection would require removing the glue, which is no fun. The solder should be secure enough on its own, but hotglue is about the only way to protect from shorts. If you do hotglue the connections, make sure everything works first and is the way you want it.

Thanks! I was pretty sure it was okay, but I was a little worried.I'm going to be packing the unit into a pretty tight space, and I want to be sure that there won't be any shorts when it's in there. THe hardware will go though a thourough test to make sure everything is workign before the glue is applied and the casing commences. Essentially i'm doing the same thing G-force did with his NES mini, with a few modifications

You could also just use heatshrink tubing.

Heat shrink tubing is great for protecting wires you need to solder together (I recently heard about it, too late for my project, I was using electrical tape!), hot glue is great for securing a cable to the mobo to relieve stress on a soldered wire. If you need to remove hot glue, carefully do a deep score in the glue (score, not cut through completely) and twist it off with pliers.
