Should I do it, sell my DS lite for a GP2X or PSP?

I have a DS lite, but I not used it in over 3 months. I use it for like 10-15 minutes a month as a light source when I am in bed mostly. I was thinking about going for the home brew! I like the fact that home brew = FREE GAMES all the time. I was looking forward to the new zelda game, but it is just going to be another rehash of all the other ones anyway, Nintendo needs some original games.

+ = (GOOD)
- = (BAD)
+ & - = (Uhhh? Good but bad)

If I get a PSP
++Can play 3D emulators a lot better
+ I can play PSP games that are fun (GTA:LCS is all I can think of that I want)
+ It can do home brew.
+ Has a nice screen if I wanted to watch a movie or whatever. (I don't care too much for movies though.)
+ Could watch movies/listen to music with it
- The whole bricking thing.
- UMD games
- Only a stupid nub for a control stick.

If I get a GP2X
++Pretty much 95% of the games for it are FREE.
++Constant new free games.
+Games are on more relyable SD cards.
+ Could watch movies/listen to music with it
+Nobody else would have one so I would be cool.
+ & -70% of the games are puzzle games
+ & - Can not do 3D very well but it can do it.

If I keep the DS
+ I could always get a R4 DS?
+ & - I can play the new Zelda game.
- It will just sit there rarely being used.
+Wont have to bother trying to sell it.

So what should I do?

Yeah but thats just what I know of the 2 systems! Thats why I am asking if I should do it.

I have had a GP2x for a while (and been quite active in their forum too).

Go for a GP2x - it is designed for homebrew and emulators, whereas Sony do all they can to preclude you from using the PSP as such. The GP2x screen is 4:3 whereas the PSP is widescreen, which means emulators are stretched. The GP2x has excellent emulators for the Megadrive (Genesis), NES, NeoGeo and other platforms, and uses standard SD cards.

Word to the wise - new GP2x coming out soon, with 4 buttons instead of a D-pad and touchscreen (no big deal) - means some people will be selling off their older models soon, cheaper. It is easy to open a GP2x and mod in a proper D-pad (from GBA ideally) to replace the joystick. I have guides for doing this sort of mod on the GP2x site (from my early modding days!).

Go for GP2x, it is a good system.

I was reading this topic witch is a good one on the GP2X VS PSP.

GP2X takes standard AA batteries, but they run out fast.

PSP has the ability to emulate PSX games at full speed. (how the heck.... It dose not even have as many buttons as a PS1 controller??)

GP2X seems to have no First Party support for firmware or anything.

PSP requires you to very riskily mess with it's firmware to play emulators.

What is so bad about the analogue stick on the GP2X? I like analogue sticks?

Honestly, I thought PSP pwned when it came to Homebrew to...the fact is that the only thing that it has that is better than the DS is the N64 Emulator, which isn't full speed yet.

Buy an R4 DS and an EZ Flash 3 in 1 a long with a MicroSD Card (I recommend 1 GB or higher)

I say go for a PSP.

PSP:

+ Cheaper than a GP2X
+ More powerful hardware
+ Retail games
+ WiFi, web browsing
+ Movies and Music
+ More readily available parts and accessories

- Memory Sticks and special batteries
- Firmware up/down/left/dennis-grades
- 16:9 screen, so you're stuck with letterboxing or "fatboy mode"

Bottom line: More bang for your buck than the GP2X, as long as you don't mind messing with firmware.

GP2X:

+ SD cards
+ AA batteries
+ 4:3 screen
+ Breakout board makes it into a pseudo-computer
+ TV out

- No analog controls
- Terrible battery life
- It's a niche item, so less support online.
- Good luck finding parts in real stores.
- More expansive than the PSP
- Little to no 3D support
- Build quality

Bottom line: You pay more and get less. Not worth it.

Remember, if you're doing homebrew on the PSP you can get every single game for free. Every new release is another game you can illegally acquire for free. Memory Sticks and SD Cards use identical manufacturing techniques; reliability does not change from one to the other (however it does change from one brand to another, within both formats).

If you absolutely had to get one or the other, I think it comes down to your madd skillz. Getting homebrew set up on the PSP is a royal pain, and it gets harder all the time. If you can get the custom firmware installed (or buy one pre-hombrewified) than the PSP is the best choice.

Personally, I'd probably just keep the DS and get an R4. Yeah, PSP's are nifty (the new slim PSP has TV-out!- a cord, not a massive dock) but meh. Honestly, I think I prefer the DS' selection of retail titles more than the PSP's.

I looked this question up last night, the answer is that it uses the analog nub for L2 and R2 (left=L2, right=R2, changeable in the settings).

It doesn't have an analog stick, only a digital stick.

I'm considering getting a PSP myself. I'd have to hardware mod it to do some neat things. Definitely some cool firmware out there for it, you can even get an IR keyboard to work with Sony software now.

gp2x
psp
ds lite with r4

I like them all a lot. Bust I will have to say the psp is just about the best for me due to all the cool stuff. I stream all my media to it so I can watch it in bed and stuff like that. The gp2x has some fun game like beat2x, beat 2x is better then Jesus himself I mean I played that game non stop for such a long time after I got my gp2x. The ds seems to have the best games, I don't use it for emus or anything I just like to put 20 to 30 ds games on it on a 2 gig card witch is a big advantage over the psp and kinda the gp2x. I like the ds lite for the size out I just love to go somewhere and slip that or the micro in my pocket and be on my way because its nice and small and the psp and the gp2x are both like lugging a brick around.

If anyone has any questions I can answer a lot about just the experience of all 3.

good one. You forgot that it can EMULATE a 360, but Xbox 360 games are the sux, so he doesn't.

I can sell you a psp slim with 3.72 m33 on it if you decide to get a psp.
