Mp3 sorting. (Also, What is Second Party? Find out now!)

Post by Kurt_ »

Is there an mp3 player or similar device that allows end-users to define categories or something similar to individual songs, so that you can filter out songs by your predetermined categories?

An example:

I have 5 songs on my Mp3 player (hypotetical, for simplicity's sake). Tey are:

1) NES Mario Theme
2) Rammstein
3) NES Zelda Theme
4) Our Lady Peace
5) SNES Zelda Theme

I can put them in defined categories:

8 Bit: 1 and 3
16 bit: 5
Evil German Music: 2
Wimpy Canadian Music: 4

Video Game Music: 1, 2, and 5
Mainstream Music: 2 and 5

I can then filter on my mp3 player what music I choose to listen to:

"I feel like listening to evil German music today!"

So I enter filters => Evil German Music or Filters => Mood => Evil German Music.

Has it been done?

Could I do it?

I wasn't quite sure what 2nd party referred to. We all know 1st and 3rd party, but 2nd is overlooked. Here's why:
Second-party developer wrote: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the video game industry, a second-party developer is a developer who, while being a separate entity from any console manufacturer, is tied to a specific one usually through contract or partial ownership and makes games specifically for that console manufacturer.

The defining characteristic is that a second-party developer is a company completely separate from the manufacturer, while first-party developers are considered to be a "division" of the console maker itself.

A second-party developer should not be confused with an internal first-party studio. For example, Intelligent Systems, developers of the original Metroid games (as well as the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars games,) is an internal Nintendo studio and therefore not second-party. Camelot Software Planning, developer of the Golden Sun, Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games, is an example of a second-party developer.

The term "second-party" however, is not an official business term like "first-party" and "third-party", but is used simply to distinguish between third-party developers who develop games for various video game consoles, and developers who, while still a third-party, provide software only for a single video-game console (or consoles for a single company.)

For some reason, it always angered mee to see that stupid Hudson bee or that Camelot logo, and especially the HAL and soon to be Sora logos on Smash Bros.

Always made the game seem like a lie. :P

EDIT: Found it necessary to make your post less useless? :P Your MP3 idea sounds fairly simple, and I'm sure that some players let the user sort by genre as you can artist and album. I don't see what you're actually asking though, by "can this be done?" and such.

I'm pretty sure that you can put multiple tags in the genre part of the metadata of a song. Oh, and Rammstein isn't evil.

I don't want to make an "I'm leaving" thread, but I've sort of lost interest in this board. So if you notice that I'm gone, that's why.

Pretty much any MP3 player with a GUI (including iPod) allows you to setup playlists, and this would allow you to do what you want.
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

Yeah you can use iTunes with Smart Playlists. You could just put the different tags in the "comments" part of the song (use Ctrl+I to access the info), and then make a Smart Playlist for each of your particular sorting methods. Other iTunes-alternatives might have a similar option, but I'm not really sure...

I figured Apple had done this. I don't know why, but I knew it. Anyways, thanks for that. That's all I wanted to know. I have no intention of pressing any further.

Now, a topic change to rammstien:

I never said they were bad. They're a good band, even if they have simple lyrics (Can't blame them, English is the best language for making songs). But they are EVIL.

Just watch this video (Inappropriate for young'uns, click at your own virgin eye's risk) http://youtube.com/watch?v=-----------

For those who don't want to / are too young to click the link, just look at this picture:

Moderator edit: The barrier of an age is nothing. Is a cavity only painful when one is a child? That video is not appropriate at all for this forum.
