Can you remove/change built in games on a Super Joy III?

Post by Seaniccus »

I'm thinking of building a project off a Super Joy III, as they are fairly easy to come accross at the local flea market - but I don't want my final project to have the "100,000" built in games of the Super Joy III. Do we know what chip these games are stored on? Is there a way to disable it, or re-flash it with different games?

Disabling it is easy, just jump two wires on the cartridge connector and hook up a cartridge slot. (There's a bunch of directions around. Search the forums, the wiki, or PoD.)

As for re-flashing: No. The ROM inside isn't re-writable. (Read-Only Memory... ya know. ;)) It is possible that it's an EEPROM (electronic erasable programmable read only memory) but they're more expensive than normal ROM chips, and therefore less likely to be used by the pirates.

You could get the result you want by hacking a NES flash cart to the cartridge slot but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Thanks, I didn't know about portables of doom, i'll look around.

Anyway, i'm interested in disabling it entierly, so that the roms won't be playable even when there is not a cartridge plugged in - either that or have it boot directly into just Mario or something.
I'll look around a bit more before asking any more questions on this subject
