GC boot without Disk Drive?

Post by toru173 »

Is it at ALL possible for a gc to boot without the disk drive? With a comercially availible mod chip bios replacement, for example. If not, is it possible for the gc to boot with only the disk controller but not the actual laser assembly? Thanks in advance!

Success! Natively (without any mod chips etc) the cube will complain without the disk drive driver board - however, if you simply remove the laser assembly and leave the driver board in place the cube boots without complaining! Assuming you were then to use SD storage to boot your games it's possible (I believe) for a gamecube to function without the disk drive!

The driver board is only about 5mm thick, so it doesn't add nearly as much to the bulk as the laser assembly does. My next step is to see how well the cube functions without the disk drive, which means getting some sort of mod chip. Does anyone have particular recommendations? Ability to load a DOL from and SD card is a must, and ability to stream a DOL over the network is also a good option. I'm not so familiar with the selection availible. Any suggestions?

[shameless plug] Well, this would make everything much easier. You wouldn't even need the driver board. Are you interested in joining our team? :P [/shameless plug]

Edit: Oh... looks like you already have. I didn't recognize your SN... ^-^*
