N00b's Guide to Portablizing: Need Help!

Ever since I've been to these forums, there have been numerous threads stating, "I want to make portables, but I've never done this stuff before. Help!" Sure, through a good amount of research, a good number of these threads can be diminished, but I feel it would be much better and more welcoming if new people coming in had a solidified "guide", so to speak, on general portablizing and electronics tips, tricks, unwritten rules, etc.

I'll be making this in the following days, but before I get started, I'd like your input. What things do you all feel should be included in the guide? Keep in mind this is portablizing/electronics related, NOT rules, forum etiquette, etc. Sky made sure we had a good source for that.

With that being said, let the suggestions fly, and thanks in advance for contributing!

lots of pictures, not of the same thing of course but pictures always make it easier to understand when it comes to this

Assuming this is for people with little to no electronics knowledge, it might help to explain what some of the common electronic components are. This would probably come in handy for people who don't know what a regulator is and that could be bad.

Why not make the guides on the wiki so that people can make/edit/update them easily?

A section on what to look for when removing parts from the motherboard would be extremely helpful.

I think you should include VERY basic electronics knowledge including what ground means (something I struggled with), black = negative, red = positive, etc.

I think if possible you should also include a tutorial on how to use a multimeter and which ones to get

I think soldering is something that just kind of... makes sense... you shouldn't need a guide for it.

circles and arrows in pictures, or letters and numbers. Something so that beginners know what what is.
