If you have ever made a dvd, then you know there is a folder on a DVD called "Audio_TS" that is empty. What is that folder for? Does it store the copy protection?

What purpose does it serve?

I'm only guessing here, but maybe it's for multi-language movies to store the audio... or something

I don't know...

It stands for Audio_TitleSet (like Video_TitleSet), and is used for DVD-Audio (high-def audio or whatever they call it). Some old DVD players require the folder to be present in order to play any DVD. Most do not though. When I burn stuff, I usually put one in there just in case. It'd not hard to do, and it doesn't take up space.
