Just a general question here. When adding leds to an existing console (not a portable) for aesthetics do I just hook up to the +5volts in and a ground point and add a resistor to vary the brightness level?
I want to make sure that's all I need before I start messing around.

Forward voltage on smaller LEDs is usually 2 volts, and the current draw would vary from 10-20mA. If you still have the LED specs, that would help.
Supply voltage would obviously be 5v as you described it.
