Nice job so far! What do you have planned for the case? Color, style, etc.?

as far as I have planned, it's probably going to be 26x16x3.5cm
Somewhere around that. And square.

What I have been doing in the meantime is the following: desolder audio/video/power outs on the SNES board, put 47 Ohm resistors between the RGB, desolder a cart slot from the sound-dead snes (as practice) and secure some stuff with hot glue. I have also (for your enjoyment) switched the testing game to super mario world :D

Pictures tommorow, as I gotta recharge some rechargeables for my camera.

I'm very happy with my process so far. Everything is going better and faster than I expected!

I gotta say tho, I am a little afraid of finally going to make the case. We'll see how that's gonna end!

Okay, currently I am running my SNESp (which is actually pretty much done, except for the case) on the default Sony PSOne plug, which outputs 7.5V and 2A (!!!), and when I have my custom 8Ohm speakers at full volume, and the four LEDs on, my snes just crashes after a few seconds. If I turn down the volume everything works fine. Now, that might just be a solution, but a crappy one.
I don't want my SNESp to crash if you want loud sound and a picture at the same time...

Hell, how can it even USE that much?! I mean come on, 2 Ampere, that's a massive amount for a snes and an LED modded screen...

On a side note; I have added battery holders (from a broken game gear I had for no reason), desoldered and resoldered some more, added new (apparently) ampere eating speakers, and a switch for switching between batteries, and... nothing so far (cause I haven't de/resoldered the screen plug yet, that's the last thing I'm gonna do.)

I won't show you pictures, because I'm angry at those speakers. It goes like this, if I don't get a solution for this problem, you don't get to see any pictures. That's right, neither of you, mom, and the other guy who is reading this thread are going to see any pictures!!!

On a more serious note, I'll probably take some pictures tommorow.

As it turns out it was not the speakers, but rather the SNES-to-ground-cable which was too thin, that caused this problem. Before I noticed that, I put the old speakers back on, and I'm just gonna let them stay that way. They're good enough anyway.

So, here's the promised pictures:
Image

The whole set up, four batteries missing because they're in the camera.

A picture taken with another camera, running on batteries this time

Starwing titlescreen

Heat sink + regulator. Not yet relocated.

Image

The battery cases which I ripped out of a broken game gear
(I actually ordered some, but I was tired of waiting for them. I'm impatient like that)

Image

Not a picture of the stuff I removed. In other words, a picture of what's gone.

Image

Screen closeup. It looks crappy because the game moves. It's actually a pretty nice screen, asides from the crappy resolution.

Nice job, but ooooooo. Relocating the cart slot caused the death of 2 snes's before I decided to leave it be (Of course, 1 broke BEFORE I could attempt to relocate it, too). Of course, I only have acid flux. I should get some non-conductive flux someday.

Hope it does't break, you done good, Kyo. You done good.

Just remember: The guts are always 80% or higher in similarity to everyone else's. It's the case that makes yours unique. Spend lots of time on it, don't slack because you're almost done it, and don't slack because you're almost done. Did I mention not to slack off near the end of completion?
Hey, sup?

Seeing as most of the work is on the screen part of the whole thing, money is the only thing I have to loose!

Bad news, everyone! In the process of removing the cartridge slot (remember when I praised my desoldering iron earlier? well I take it back, it SUCKS!) I destroyed it (sooner or later).

Also, I'm broke because I ordered 4021s, wire and other stuff I don't actually need before destroying it.

Also, the spare SNES I had is one of the big-boarded ones.

So, unless I find some way of earning around 15€, the project is on a hiatus till next month. And next month, I'll buy like 6 SNES, so that this will never happen again. EVER.

Maybe I should just make a case in the meantime. I might use the bigboard SNES to practice, by relocating it's cartslot for no reason. Yeah, I could totally do that.

It's like Kurt said, desoldering the cart slot is really an unnecessary step and normally leads to disaster. There's plenty of creative places you can put the cart slot while still making the portable nice, and they'll also save you a lot of pain and hardship in the end. Trust me, I'd know.

Well, I blame my desoldering iron. I guess this teaches us a lesson about tools that cost 5 bucks... They don't properly last long.

I should say that it's not totally your desoldering iron's fault. Actually desoldering the cartridge slot of a SNES is among one of the most difficult tasks in the world. Instead you could cut the cartridge slot into portions using your saw or any other tool and buy a replacement cartridge slot from e-bay:

again, germany. But I actually have a spare one. I desoldered it from a bigboard snes to test my desoldering iron (shortly before it started to suck, or should I say not-suck?), that worked fine.

I have actually thought of that tho, dremeling it off and just soldering a new one on...

Oh well, I have some time to think about it now, I guess.

While you're waiting for the replacement SNES you can always start building the case.
