Pre-assembled Step-Up Regulators?

Well I'm trying to get 4 Ni-MH to output a constant 5V, even after using up some battery life. The solution? A Step-Up Regulator. The problem? Some parts are really hard to come by. Where could I buy a pre-assembled Step-Up regulator that can output +5V, 600mA (or whatever a NOAC + HipGear and speakers uses) and a maximum input voltage of 4.8V. Minmum is no concern, but probably around 2V would be nice.

Anyone have any idea where I could get some? Or some of whatever 'L' stands for on the datasheet? I knew once, but it escapes me at the moment.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't a transformer do the same thing?

I think you should either bump up the voltage with another battery wired in series, or take the hint that your batteries need to be charged when their voltages drop that low.

If you're set on a step-up, I don't think you'll be able to find a suitable pre-made one anywhere. Your best bet is just to hit Digikey and build one from scratch.

You need a flyback regulator because your input voltage will be both above and below your output voltage. You'll have to build one, just get on the National Semiconductor web site and look up one in a TO-220 package, and build the circuit based on the schematic in the datasheet.
