The iPod Mini (the old one) apparently used a Microdrive, so you could have a reasonably cheap MP3 player if you put an 8 gig CF card in it. The original battery is apparently only 3.7v @ 500mah, so you could in theory run it off of 3 NiMh AAA batteries...

yes nintendo mantains a high profit margin but their prices are in my opinion REASONABLE, gamecubes were a hundred bucks and wii is 250 considering their competition is 50+dolars above that (in some cases hundreds) its permissable lol

Make sure its a first gen mini. The second gen minis and other ipods have connectors that aren't the right pinout to use a CF card plug-and-play, you need to make an adapter, I tried but all the pinouts I found were conflicting.
I want to try using NiMH AAs in my ipaq, the battery is completely dead in it, I also want to LED mod it, but first I need some ambition...

Yes except the reason they can do that is that their technology isn't cutting edge like Apple or Song or Microsoft. I'd rather pay top dollar for something that I'll be able to use for a number of years than a low price for something I'm going to have to replace in 18 months. But that's just me...

Next there is the issue of microsoftm, yes they are everywhere and yes they charge a lot too, but face it ....its Microsoft! this means that they will be able to have their products opened up and then they may become, MUCH more useful

And lets go on the the product I think is the best for the money, a Zen, the Creative Zen Vision M 60Gb is about the best value I have seen, they are not the full bloated media players that cost too much but they are a high quality audio player that has a very large amount of storage, and face it that is very good

I hope that people here can be a little more objective, I have a Zune that I have already filled, and I barely use it anymore, mostly because I haven't synced it in about a mont, I chose the zune mostly for the Halo 3 spec. edition, amoung other things, the Spec. ed. was just the final push, hopefully here will be more in a few, like a linux boot

Again, the iPod Classic 80 gig has a better "bytes to bucks" ratio. On Amazon.com, a new 30 gig Zen Vision M is the same price as the 80 gig Classic. (That's more than double the space, essentially for free.) I haven't been able to find a price for the 60 gig version, but it's most likely over $300. Brand loyalty is a ridiculous reason to get less for your money, in my opinion. (Besides, nobody says you have to use an iPod for videos, pictures, and text files. I know I sure don't.)

Yes, Apple products do tend to cost more than others, but they make up for it with ease of use and reliability. They have always paid more attention to interface design than other companies. Just look at the compact Macs. Plug in the keyboard, plug in the mouse, plug it into the wall, and you're all set. The iPod/iTunes combo follows the same general idea. If you want it to, it can load your device with the songs you listen to most on your computer. If you want to manually handle your files, that's OK too. So what if you can't put songs on it like a USB thumbdrive? This way you know they'll play properly, and you can add or alter the metadata without any additional software.

I watch a lot of TV shows on my iPod video g5, legally; bought the shows off iTunes. They're pretty big, along with a bunch of my video podcasts. I watch all of the shows and all of the podcasts consistently. And youtube kinda sucks, putting it on a portable device can only make it worse.

Show me an equivalently-sized product with the exact same specs, using well written firmware (thus ruling out almost all chinese 'mp4' players), that is cheaper than the new iPods. And a $200 price drop on the iPhone? Why are people even complaining...

On another note, I have a lot of podcasts, about 4gb's worth. Now I have a 4g 20gb iPod (18.5 really) and I have 2gb left, and no, that doesn't include any videos.

Does that really matter that much? Youv'e already got all your own music on your ipod and the radio stations rarely play good music that you wouldnt already have. It's not as if the radio is a good source for finding out about obscure bands or anything.
