Kyo's I'm-going-to-destroy-it-sooner-or-later-anyway-SNESp

BEHOLD!
documented live fun fun Super Nintendo entertainment system control deck portable action! (patent pending)

Because i earned tons of paypal money over the internet, I decided to waste it all on useless equipment!
While most of it hasn't arrived yet, the SNES _DID_ in fact, arrive!
It's one of the 1Chip versions too, so I can start right away.
Image

Look at it! It's scared...

Image
and it has every reason to be!

Image
In case you were wondering what the newer PAL SNES (_NOT_ snes mini) boards look like, there you go. The older snes' boards are bigger, so I made sure that I bought a SNES in a rather good condition (get it? Good condition = newer! yeah, I wish...)

Aaaaanyway;
Image
The wires on the screen mobo, which have been there for ages from another older project. Yellow/Orange = Audio, Brown = Composite Sync. This was all hotglued in place, but I removed some for troubleshooting (more on that later.)

Image
Time to solder it to the SNES. Connect everything, aaaand... doesn't work. a weird flickering. Well, damn.

Image
After removing, and resoldering the composite sync wire (that's why I removed the hot glue in the earlier pic), I realized that I had just forgotten to connect the two grounds with each other (as they run from two adaptors right now). Silly me!

Image
Works!
What you see there, is the german ALTTP.
I also haven't put 47 ohm resistors between the RGB lines yet. I just wanted to make sure everything works before doing, well, anything.

Image
And what you see there is my messy workdesk. Even tho you're only seeing the acceptably clean part of it!
I need to clean it up, but I honestly can't be bothered to before all of my tools have arrived.

You are also able to see that I slighty smallered the SNES board. This is because I was bored. The other SNES board you see in that picture is one on which I somehow broke the sound. I now use it for spare parts.

Well, that's all for now. Stay tuned!

Nice work so far! I hope your case for it comes out nicely. And FYI, don't lay motherboards on carpet like that...bad things tend to happen.
Meh, I don't post much.

Thanks for the tip, I know I shouldn't, but my camera is a real pain in the..., well it won't make any proper pics on the wrong distance or background.

So yeah, the case is the only thing I'm really insecure about. I'll probably use plexiglass, just like bacteria.

Nice progress but wouldn't SNES Mini be easier to work with, lighter, and more compact?

Nice work though...

If you need help. I've got some experience with pal boards. (almost (pretty much) finished electronics on one before switching two wires...... )

Oh, I don't (so far anyway). Thanks tho. I'll definitely get back on that if any complications occur.

But I should most likely be fine on my own.

And if I post in here anyway, I might give a little update as well:

I have not worked on the portable any more yet (waiting for 47 Ohm resistors to improve RGB), however some awesome things arrived!
-Plexiglas
inspired by bacterias awesome N64/GBA portable I decided that I should probably use plexiglas as well. So I ordered a 1000x500mm sheet of plexiglas, which about the width and height of a midget. In other words, it's more than enough (which is good for experimentation, mistakes)
-an ELECTRIC desoldering iron
This thing is freakin' chocolate cake! It's awesome. My old one just sucked solder, and you had to use a soldering iron with it. It was a pain in the lower region of the back.
-A dremel
Not an actual dremel, but a cheap copy of it, with which I'm rather happy too.
-White LEDs, 3mm
I ordered 100 of them, because 4€ for 10 is just too much. Plus I like having stuff in bulk. That way I'll never have to wait for it again.
-Switches, tact switches
Nothing much to say about these. I'll take pictures of them once I start working with 'em.

Damn! I accidentaly built a NESp, now I gotta start over again.

Man, if only you had given me that tip earlier. :D

Just kidding, here's my actual process:

So yeah, I have LED modded the screen... sort of. I have yet to test it, but I did the actual mod. I can't provide pictures of the inside of the screen either, cause my camera battery died. I'll give you some more pics tommorow.

Anyhow, here's one of the last pics I could take:
Image

Now that I think about it, I probably shouldn't have made all those pictures of myself, just because I was too lazy to go to a mirror. Oh well. :D

I'll go ahead and finish/test it now.

Yesterday evening, as promised I soldered the LEDs to two 39 ohm resistors (because they need 80 ohm each, and that was as close as I could get)

Image

I then tested one LED, soldered on another one, tested the whole thing again, and again and again. Hooray! All four LEDs are set up and working!
Now to test the screen!
Image

No picture! Awwwies... and I really gotta go to bed now... but wait a minute! The screen is OFF! Hahahahaha, I'm such a stupid idiot... Let's do that again, shall we?
Doesn't work. Oh COME ON! Waaaaait... turns out I had the ribbon cable in upside down... yeah, I know.

Anyway, let's do that _AGAIN_, shall we?
Image
Works! Hooray! Zeeelda!
Image

Now, these pictures were actually taken just right now, and not yesterday because of the lack of camera batteries. The good news is that these were taken with a camera that has a lens that supports macro. So hooray for detail!

Image

The back of the screen, with the 8 LED wires.

Image
The screen open, the LEDs, off.

Image
The screen open with the LEDs on.

That's all for now! Next step - I have no idea.

Yeah, the screen has a crappy resolution (it was really cheap!), but I really don't mind. It doesn't cause any problems during the gameplay, so yeah. I'm okay with it.
