Surround in Stereo Headphones!

Post by HotDog-Cart »

Hey, I remember a while ago. People were talking about surround sound in Stereo headphones. In the music clip, someone was walking and crunching up paper. Whats that called again?

Here is a pretty cool site if you want to mess around a little with head-related transfer functions. That may be more involved than you are really interested in.

Here, you can download a library of little files (I seem to recall them being in .wav format) for different positions relative to your head.

Then, using Matlab or Octave (or some other program) you can convolve the appropriate sample with the sound clip of your choosing. Playing the resulting sound clip through stereo headphones will make the sound seem to come from that direction.

Note: I think that the files here, which are essentially filters, are sampled at 9600 Hz or something else not quite standard like that. Make sure that your audio clip is sampled at the same rate.
